My question is for the guys breeding outside the Birmingham Roller for genetic traits.
What are some of the traits that you like about your birds and do you feel that you’re improving or have improved and maybe continue to improve in your line of rollers generation after generation?
And do you feel that you don’t get the credit you deserve from other roller fanciers – Do you think they are so closed minded and they don’t see the good and positive things that you have accomplished? (THEY DON’T GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DO), I mean aren’t we all trying to improve our rollers. doesn’t necessarily have to be a PURE BR to be improved.

I think we need to bury this subject because we all have different feelings about this subject. It is almost like talking about religion and politics. We need to move on!

Actualy LaRon I strongly disagree, people need to know where these so-called rare colors come from , you see it right here on this forum where they try and deny where it come's from, and then when their covers are pulled they deny it as a breed. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

I think it’s wrong to deny where the genes come from yes. When it gets Crossed it Stops being a BR…
But that’s not really what I meant guys, What I’m trying to say is that don’t you think the Individual deserves A little credit, I mean taking the birds backwards with the CROSS and getting results that roll and keep taking it forward to improve it.
I mean most of the discussions here have been stomping on Individuals for making “mutts” and what not. But never been recognized for their goals and patience on the subject, A lot of this guys are very competitive.

Lional, Take say a barless, pencel, andy, opal, milky ect. and try to make a family out of just such birds without breeding in a non mutt and see how far you go on developing a first class family, it can't be done, why is that ? Color breeding is it's own hobby with it's own circles of people, that is where they will get their pat on the back. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

Scott - I agree that people need to know where the colors come from and it comes from crosses. But my point was that we understand this point and we must move on in my opinion. I would not breed from one but I would never tell the next person he or she is wrong if that is what they chose to breed. This is my main point.

Laron , I tend to agree with you, those that color breed truely have a passion for it , it is a completly seperate hobby also though. The fact remains that these are just pigeons also, and it boils down to what we enjoy, no if's or butts, with that thought I am going to edit my last post some. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

I am to the point of wishing those that color breed would develope thier own competition flies; shows; and club(s). And stop trying to spin thier way into the mainstream of Birmingham Roller breeding and flying. In some areas of the country they have gained a hold into the mainstream of the Birmingham club(s) and flies.
Do we give it a rest? ---------- Just My Take On Things

Lionel I will partially answer your question. I dont think there is a breed/color that can improve on the Birmingham roller. I have tried crosses not for color but in a quest to produce something similar to the AFT's of yesteryear. I have yet to produce an F1 that was as good as either parent. I have used Orientals, Galati's, Skycutters, Birms, Fireballs, and some others that dont come to mind. All the F1's have been culled because I didnt produce anything worth pursueing. The only way to improve a "true" Birm is to breed the best to best.
Now I have to disagree with Scott here. There are families that are good enough that you could breed color birds and be competitive. I would not breed opal because it is a lethal gene and Frank Mosca just told me that Barless is also not lethal but defective. The problem is that the recessive colors will be buried. But not all are recessive and can and will take over a loft.
I have the upmost respect for a man that can breed color and roll because only a few can. Its not for me but I do like pretty birds. It cost the same to feed and ugly bird and a pretty bird.

Look guy's I’m not trying to stir things up. I don’t post much, and mostly post when I have something to say or questions I can’t answer myself. I try to read as much as I can, and am grateful for the knowledge. But every time this subject comes around the color breeders get their @ss35 handed to them and get pushed away. We don’t seem to recognize that they have gone a long way's. They don’t get the credit for their effort for breeding color birds (Just my thought). Those color mutts are still performance pigeons whether they can hold the roll or not, they might end up as concrete targets but they still perform like rollers.
For those of you that disagree with color genetics can you say that there are no such good color performing rollers?

(I'm not a color breeder either)
