Andrew, Andrew, Andrew,... My Mom woulda skinned my butt for doing something like that. LOL But, I think a little probably wouldnt hurt. They should probably be dried out some though. Too much fresh might give them the green poops, I think.. I give a little lettuce to the older birds a couple times a year and they do like it. A little green in their diet aint bad. Just dont do too much. Their system is pretty much set on dried grains.. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Funny you should ask that.I just pulled up all the plants from my first crop of peas and picked the pods off finding several that were a little dry on the outside of the pods so decided to shell them out for the birds to try. They were still green but quite large and full.Gave the smaller ones to the rollers and they gobbled 'em up in no time. The big fat peas went to the doneks and it was hilarious watching them try to eat them. They figured it out pretty quick tho and the peas dissapeared toot sweet!I think that's BS greens aren't good for them.Of course they must eat greens in the wild,my birds get dandelion leaves, lettuce, grape leaves, spinach during the summer and kale in the winter.Their shit never goes green from it and they love it.I love to see my birds happy.Next year I am going fence off a portion of my neighbours property(we have deer like the wharves have rats) to grow my own Maple Peas to feed my birds. It will probably cost me more in time, fencing materials and power to pump the water but the pleasure derived from doing it is quite rewarding. ---------- Kel. I even give my birds wheat bread; they eat it up like candy once they figure out what it is. You can feed a lot of different items to you birds including fresh vegetables out of the garden.
Just don’t give all the different stuff to you kit birds or you will lose control of them. The energy content is totally off for kit birds and they will end up flying way too long and the roll will be gone.

What Robert(Fire Brewed) said is absolutely true.I only feed the kitbirds extra stuff immediately after they have flown, and in small amounts. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

Hey Kel, I`m not sure where the BS part came from. I said that a little should be ok. In moderation... I still wouldnt overdo it. I also said I do give a little lettuce to my birds, and yes, they do love it. I`m sure the wild birds eat a lot of green stuff, but these are`nt wild birds. Go ahead and feed them all the green they`ll eat for a few days, Should be interesting...`eh ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

A couple times a year ain't much and I realize they are not wild birds but Redneckhippie(Kenny H.) said once, lettuce is not good for them and I find that to be a crock as it sure does them no harm.Have you ever tried putting a handful of plain old dirt from your yard into the grit bowl and watch them peck at it?There must be something good in there for them to have such interest in it. ---------- Kel. Kel. you are right about the lettuce as I`ve done it for years with no harm. as for the dirt, I imagine they are after some of the natural grit stones. I`ve seen a lot of feral pigeons in freshly plowed fields, probably doing the same thing. When we were kids we sifted the sand out of gravel and gave it to our pigeons, they loved it too.As for the greens, I personally just wouldnt give too much to a bird thats never had it. But they will get a little out of the yard if you let them. I just guess thats what they are getting if you let them land on the ground and they pick aat the yard. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

I don't know what they are eating in the yard.I have a plum tree out front my white homers love to go under that tree and peck more than the apples and pears for some reason. They don't seem to touch the dandelions in the yard but when I throw them in the flypen they dissapear. ---------- Kel. I watch the pigeons here in downtown Clevelend eat the left over chicken wings. They also eat the may flys that come out of Lake Erie at end of May and early June. They eat anything. No wonder why they call them rats with wings. they know how to survive.

I wrap up a bundle of spinach with a zip tie around the stems.Rinse it with water and sprinkle a little salt on it.Hang it on the side of the pen and the birds go crazy over it.
