I have a young bird that recently started landing on the pole up the block after most of the fly then decides he wants to come in when he sees the other birds landing..I've already tried all the feeding up and cutting feed back tricks with him..he is one of the birds doin the most rolling and is one of the harder workers of the kit...any ideas on y he is doing this..is the roll scaring him etc...he is about 3 months old..should I give him more time or end his career..

he is young put him away for a week in a cage by himself like a punishment no socializing with other birds then fly him with another team if you got one ...one thats not rolling as much and see what happens.. sometimes they snap out of it they not mature enough to handle the roll that you talking about. especially at that age 3 month..try that before you get rid of it you might be getting rid of a good one. but three strikes after that .don't fly him..good luck.

When you have tried everything else and soon another and another bird lands with that 1 on the pole or wherever away from the kitbox...it's time.

I would never let a domestic bird go to fend for itself in the wild! JMO

If it proves to have a fault, don't pass it on to be a headache for someone else! Use it as a foster or bin it!

Frenchroll,

Why do these birds do what they do, when they don't do what we want them to do? Try this: One.....he is young and in or near the molt. Treat it as such and give it a break till the molt is over. Two.....Don't feed him if he lights on that pole. After a few days he will head for the kit box...I hope. If all else fails, pull the last 4 primaries and rest him till they all grow back in, then try him in the air again. If it continues to act up, you must make the hard choices. You know what they are. :0(

The only thing you really can do is box the bad actor up with some regulars and let them go about 2 blocks away.Do this about 5 times to break the habit.Young birds need to fly every day.Just by observing the bird you should be able to get a feel if the bird is behind in muscular strength, sick,or dumb as a rock...Aloha,Todd

I agree with Cliff. This bird might turn out to be your best ever.

true story ....I went home last nite and put um up...he was the last bird out of the box..I reached in to scare him out , he flew straight ahead for about 15 feet and slammed into an object..he went down hard, I put him away, he's seems to be ok this mornin ..does he have
brain damage, I guess I was irresponsible for leaving something that close to the front of the box but its crazy to me that out of 13 birds he was the one to hit!!

Remember that some birds have extra metabolism than others. If he is working the hardest, he is giving a good work out for a young bird. I do suggest that you worm them if you have not done so. Young birds get their worms from the parents while feeding or when they are on their own picking some birds dropping like sparrows on top of the loft. Worms take the nutrition from the birds and don't underestimate their damage.

However, some young birds are like that. Lack the stamina...Some will mount to something while others become a crap. Good luck.

FrenchRoll, I forgot to mention that you need to watch what seeds that bird eat when feeding. Most likely he goes after the Milo only. If that is the case, then you need to change your feeding habit. Give them each grain separate until they become accustomed to the taste of all seeds.

FRENCHROLL,,this is what i do when one of my birds bump or hit hard there is injury taken place either in the body or mind .So i lock them up for 3 weeks or 4. full recovery gave time to mature mentally and heal physically. I notice my birds don't bump anymore after that if they going to be good one's. now i retrain a lot of birds but very important is to keep a written record of who is given you problem who has these problem growing up so when it comes time for breeding you check your records keeping and know who will go into your breeding program .who will remain a kit flyer .like breed like more than likely you be going backwards instead of forward.. keep up the good work..
