Because they enjoy it,never being allowed to land on the ground.Haven't you ever heard of dandelions being good for the oviducts on your hens?Makes 'em more slippery and the eggs come out easier. Why not is my question.Never mind Jay.Go back to your bottled garlic.LOL. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

You just not gonna let that diced garlic in a jar go do you!
I really don't think they need all that. They go to the ground to eat sand, grit and little stones but since we provide that to them then there is no reason for them to be on the gorund.
We need our rollers healthy but in a status that make them perform their best. I don't know how the greens might effect their performance. I stick with what is tested and true.

greens are good for them, I feed them lettuce, swisschard, and greens like that when weeding the garden, there are also some weeds they like I have seen them eat them when out sunning and will pick at through the wire if they get tall enough. so when I pull them I just through them in with the breeders, they go crazy for fresh greens.

Jay,sorry I have to make a further comment please don't take offense but your last statement is like saying "I've refused to eat tomatoes all my life till I'm 12 and done just fine so now I'm 13 I'm gonna keep on not eating tomatoes because it is tried and true." ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

Well Kel..no offense taken at all. But I refuse to make Rabbits out of my rollers. If I need to feed them lattice and carrots, I will get rabbits and couple good recipes.
Those rollers are for performance and I use what is tested and true to peek their performance and be able to manage them. I don’t know how to control rollers when they are on greens and I don’t want my rollers to hop like rabbits.
Pigeons are healthy in nature. They need minimal maintenance to stay healthy. We as people are kind and our kindness become ignorance to the way nature works. People want to save that sickly or injured birds because of our kindness instead of removing such birds to strengthen the stock of birds they are working with.
Adding things to the water, over medicating and feeding greens, adding garlic, ACV, bleach, vitamins and heavy protein feed and what have you lead your rollers become racers...then get racing homers instead.
You need to be able to break down your rollers and build them back up at any given time to get the max out of them. If that is not the case, then homers will do and allot cheaper.

I think they are talking about feeding the breeders not the kit birds all that healthy stuff.I myself don't see anything wrong with providing a little natural into there diets.I don't do it but maybe one day i will try it on my breeders I'm open minded. if it won't hurt them. but as far as the statement goes how would you like to eat cornflake all day .remember these are animals not humans they are happy with what ever they get.

How you see Homers being a lot cheaper.I had homers before rollers and they were expensive in every way.matter of fact more money in feed because they don't get broken down with less food. adding Garlic and ACV doesn't turn your birds into racers I think you need to take those out the list.now bleach is a no no..vitamins occasionally.on rest days they can make the birds fly longer stronger too.heavy protein feed no need for that too unless you are breeding. ---------- Ralph

Rollers into rabbits? You're funny Jay!Good one. Ralph, good points made. But Jay,even the kitbirds are not machines and who keeps their birds at peak performance condition all the time, especially if you are a backyard flyer and not really into competition. Here we have the W/C and that is it so we have lot's of time to mess around and by that I don't mean mess them up.Feeding them greens is just like going on vacation and I like to pamper my birds once in a while.Cheers mate, and keep posting. It is good to have someone to debate things with in a civil kind of way. ---------- Kel. Ralph and Kell, you get homers right from under the bridges. I can send you dozens from downtown here in Cleveland.
Kell, I didn't say peek performance at all times!!!
Giving the stuff mentioned to the breeders, I can go a long with. There are unnecessary benefits to that but for the life of me I don't see how it will benefit the kit birds.
Believe me pigeons are healthy by nature. The access of stuff that we give them is unnecessary cost that can be easily eliminated. Try it for yourself and go for 6 month without giving the rollers the extra stuff that I stated above and you will notice no degradation of their health or demeanor. We should all maintain a strong flock where only the fittest to survive to strengthen our stock. Given the unnecessary stuff will only make the pigeons dependent on them. Maybe the difference between our views is that I don’t see the rollers as pets, I see them as teammates and I am the coach.
