Seven 50 lbs bags of feed cost me $124. We need to find a way to blame this on congress, too.

2 bags of winter wheat
2 bags of milo
2 bags of safflower
1 bag of Austrian peas

Plus I drove 70 miles one way to get it.

Nick, that would cost me $198 Canuck bucks up here on the island, plus my ferry fare and gas and 3 hours out of my day to go over to town. It's worth it!!I've blown money on a lot worse crap than pigeon feed.

Hey Nick, ethanol subsidies for ethanol fuel plus growing economies in Asia mean people want to eat better.

In other words, shortages lead to higher prices. DRILL HERE DRILL NOW PAY LESS!

Yeah sure but how about burn less fuel, drive less and cut down on your global footprint. You can bet your bottom dollar the fuel companies won't lower the prices once they got 'em there.Oh yeah,it dropped from $1.49 per litre to $1.42 due to lower per barrel prices? They are still reaping record profits just like the banks who are lending us money on false home equities,or on a promise to get a job soon.

Less than 18 month ago I could get wheat for 6 bucks a bag and milo for 7 bucks a bag. Safflower would run about 11 bucks and peas about 13. The milo and wheat have nearly doubled and the safflower and peas are up 40% or more.

Now that is for eastern Arkansas. It was more in California, but the availability and quality was much better.

Nick,
The way I see it, the rising cost of feed could actually have a positive effect. Remove all the mediocre and questional birds that aren't worthy of feeding and it will improve your stock in the process.

Sal,

Due to the high cost of feed I'm looking at my own birds with a critical eye.
There are several that aren't earning their keep...lol

Safflower is now up to 35.00 per bag here in Tucson. Regular Pigeon mixes are now 20.00-25.00 per bag. I now use a lot of Wild Bird seed in my mixes. Wal Mart's Pennington is mainly Milo and Millet and the feed store's is mainly Milo. It helps cut the cost.

I'm with Russ and Sal on this one!Be a performance breeder, and that entails constant scrutiny of your stock.A lot of guys new to the hobby are happy just to have a bird that rolls, but if you are to move forward, you need to stop collecting and start selecting.Otherwise you are left standing still.....Aloha,Todd

I agree with Russ and Sal, to be the Pigeon Hardnose. But this is my attempt to fight high grain prices. Buy In Bulk! I got this 2 ton grain bin used for about $400 and I do have to drive a couple of hours each way to get to the big grain storage bins. But hard winter wheat; $7.83 a bushel [60 lbs] and milo; $10.75 a 100. That compares to 11.75 a 50 for milo and $23 for 50 lbs. of wheat locally.grain bin This could work real well with clubs, everybody pitches in and get theirs at the discount price. But with it filled, I'll be good for 8 months or so. Might not work for everybody, but I'm givin' it a go. Woody

Nick,

Yesterday I picked up 2 bags of feed at our feedstore here in San Antonio and it totaled $45.60. I would say you got a much better price than I did.

I think I will just start culling harder once the molt is over....

Anybody got a good recipe?

The price of feed has just went out of sight! It all goes back to the price of oil, pain at the pump. Nuff said cause I could go NUTS on that subject.

All this talk about ethanol production and the lack of drilling for oil in Alaska being responsible for the price of grains going up is overlooking the fact that the biggest money(ethanol pruducers have some of it)pays the ethanol lobbyists in Washington to lobby the government to accept their plans and never think about alternative sources of energy we could develop to make our world a better place. To cut down on emissions of greenhouse gases and global warming we are not going to do it by producing ethanol or more fossil fuels. This is not just my opinion,it is science!!!Trouble is our dumb ass politicians won't listen to well educated people.

Kel,
food for fuel is just plain stupid.Ethanol is an extremely inefficient fuel. It takes 3 times more energy to produce than it produces itself. The processes used in production of ethanol exhaust more greenhouse gases than the ethanol when it is burned in a car. The addition of ethanol to a combustion engine is hard on the top end of the motor and is likely to burn a piston if used for an extended period in amounts over 7%.
Its a lose lose all the way around. I agree 90 percent of the politicians arent worth the effort. We do have a weapon in the arsenal of reality checks for these peckerheads.

THE VOTE! I say vote out all the incumbents and put some new faces in congress. Next vote, vote them out and get a new guy in there. Cycle them thru so they dont get too comfortable and caught up in the politico scene.

Nick, I just got 145 Lbs. Of Red Wheat for $31.03 yesterday In Ohio. My wife gets it for me from a guy at the mill. It's his next years seed. Not Treated or cleaned. But not dirty anyway. I'm Hoping he will have some more, It's good stuff!! He brings it in from home.My Game breeder pellets went to $41.75 for 3- 50Lbs Bags. My friend Morris DeRyke showed me some Kent 13% pellets he feeds. It's about half the size. I'm going to try that, It's a buck or so more a bag but I think I'll have less waste. When I feed pellets in Indivdual pens some pairs throw out more than they eat of pellets. Some pairs waste very little. And my open lofts with pellets waste none! I'm about out of Saulflour so I'll soon see how much thats went up next week.

Hey tapp.....where abouts in Ohio are you?? Iam here in Ashland. I work at Town & Country Co-Op. I got some wheat 2 weeks ago, 3 bushels(60lbs a bushel) for $15.00 straight from the farmer. We sell 50 lb of recleaned wheat for $8.10 and 50 lb Milo for $7.45. What's the name of the gamebird pellets that you use. I was using Nature Wise Gamebird pellets. I think it was around $10 or $11 a 50 lb bag?

spinnin jennys loft....I just might have to look into a grain bin or two like the one you have.

Kel, No man, you don't gotta grow your own. You just gotta take out some of the middle men. The grain elevators buy from the farmer, dry it, bag it and sell to the distributors, who sell it to the farm and home store or the seed stores, etc. You can buy directly from the grain elevators, but only in bulk [not bagged] Most of them have independent truckers who will deliver the mix you want in an auger truck, fill your bin right up. Might not be so easy in LA or NYC but most of the country has them in somewhat close proximity. The middle men just try to keep us blinded of the fact. Google around or check the yellow pages for grain storage facilities or bulk grain sales. I think it could really work for an organized club. Good Luck! Woody

Trouble is I'm about 500 miles from the farmers. My neighbour has an empty field and a well on the property so next spring I may try fencing a section to grow at least some peas.I know it will be alot of work but I hope to make a go of it.

Kel, yeah man, 500 mile delivery charge would be pretty bad! Peas are one of the most expensive seeds in the mix so it would make it more worth the work involved. Good Luck and send a pix of your first crop. Woody
