Almond is a genetic color modifier. You have to have it to produce more. I do not know if it is recessive or dominant, maybe someone else can help with that? ---------- RT Williams

Dominant, one parent must be an almond. Almond cock X non almond hen = 50% almonds almond hen X non almond cock = 100% almonds If my memory is any good! ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

From the looks of RollingLine is you need a hen to get all Almond offsprings.

Almond to kite bronze produces the best almonds. To me classic almond and sprinkel are the two most handsome colors birds can come in. But as said you have to have it to make it.

Bman If almond cock is homozygous, wouldn't all of his offspring carry the almond gene? If the cock is heterozygous then the ratio above would hold true. ---------- RT Williams

I have a black mottle cock mated to a almond hen and I get about half almonds.I get part black almonds, almond, red mottles, black mottles. They have been mated for two years and produce some very good deep very frequent birds.

RT, since almond is dominant it can not be "carried" It is either almond or not. At least that is how I understand it.Just like red and blue. Red being dominant a red cock can carry blue but not vice versa. A hen is what you see is what you get with the color. ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

bman Almond is still carried on two loci (one from the cock, one from the hen). If on one it is shown (ie dominate)if on both still shown but passed to all offspring. example red cock homozygous breed to blue hen. all male offspring red carrying blue. all females red. almond cock homozygus breed to non almond hen. all offspring carrying almond. The male must pass almond to the offspring, He does not have a gene with out the almond not to pass to offspring. Just my thoughts. Been 10 years since genetics in college and still learning about pigeons. I could easily be wrong. ---------- RT Williams

>>>how do you make an almond cock? or if you have one cock watt color should the hen be to have a good color balance on the kids?? <<<<
The only way to make an almond is with another almond.
If you have one almond cock, no matter what non almond you mate him to you will get half almonds in cocks and hens.
If you mate him to another almond their sons will be 1/2 homozygous Almond (white with possible eye problems or die in the shell), and 1/2 Almond. Their daughters will be 1/2 almond and 1/2 non almond.
The best way to make classical almond is by mating him with a kite, but many people preffer straight almond x almond matings and take their chances with the homozygous Almond.
If you mate an almond hen to a non almond cock, all their sons will be almond and all their daughters non almond.

Alan Thanks for helping me understand. I was unaware that homozygous Almond was a fatal gene combination. With that information everything makes sense. I can see why color breeders have so much fun. I still just like to see them perform. ---------- RT Williams

Val,
Nice to "see" you again!
I am just a lurker now, not much to post because all my extra energy goes to the newly revived Flying Oriental Roller Society. It's been fun getting the club back on it's feet. It's only been 6 months and we have more than 70 members already.

Depends on what type of an Almond you want. The one I posted is Classical Almond. It's a Kite Bronze Almond. JM420LOFT's is a nice Spread Almond (Black Almond)
If you want Classical Almond, mate your Almond to a Kite. If you want Spread Almond, mate your Almond to a Black.
Almond can take on an almost endless amount of different expressions, depending on what factors are in the bird along with Almond.
