Gotta get control of your lofts to avoid the bloody beatings some of these birds are getting. Mixing doves with pigeons don't work. If you don't have the facilities in place don't keep buying all kinds of birds no matter how pretty they are. Build the facility first; then buy the bird or animal.
A mix breed loft does nothing for you, but to cause you to totally loose control. You will have a whole barn full of mongrels in no time. If you have, but one loft you can have, but one breed and of course one species. Do you know doves and pigeons can mate? Donkeys and horses can too. Thier off spring cannot, but they sure can.
Stop being collectors and start being breeders; studied people of animal husbandry. ---------- Just My Take On Things

Nick,
Even the rollers sometimes mix it up and one comes out the worst. All You can do is patch one up and hope it makes it to see the roll or be a breeder sometime.

Well, mine does stink and you are right; nobody has the right to talk down to anyone. My intentions was not to disrespect anyone; my intention was to to give advise on how to protect the animals we have dominion over and to avoid mongrelizing lofts.
Sorry Victor, if I offended you.....I honestly did not mean too.
I have shaved off some of the original post. ---------- Just My Take On Things

Andrew, I hope you know Nick well enough to know that he meant well!
My first thought was, why are these breeds mixed in the same pen, but when I was younger, I did the same thing! We get infatuated with the birds and want them all!
Some of us have already learned the hard way though, and we know whats going to happen! Feelings are a hard thing to express on these darn computers!
I agree that if your gonna have different breeds though, do your best at keeping them seperated. They don't have feelings like we do! Its survival of the fittest (most dominant) for them!
Good luck Andrew! Hope your bird recovers! ---------- Val

Andrew, dont let it get you down. I bet a lot of us done that at some time. When I started I had several breeds also together in one loft. I learned the hard way and a good friend of mine told me the same thing Nick said, in just about the same way. Now the only pigeons I have are my rollers, But... Eventually I had 5 different lofts in 3 different buildings. Each breed had its own space. Now I got rollers in 2 of them, 1 is back to being the loft in a barn the way it was meant to be, and the other 2 have been gutted and that building will soon be 3 kitboxs accessible from the inside for feeding etc...
BUT, I still have a few doves that I keep in a large cage by the deck, cause I like to listen to them in the morning. IN the winter they move into the hen loft. I have no problems with them and have never had any cross breed. Andrew, you love your birds, you feed your birds. Do what you want with them. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts

Nick you know as well as I that kids will be kids. Does that mean they wont learn from their mistakes. I surely hope not. I have two breeds in my loft and have had for many years. I have never had a cross hatch. I keep two breed that are completely the oposite in type and size for that main reason. If there is something iligitimate then I want to be able to recognize it rite out of the egg. I dont keep this other breed for any other reason than the fact that they make good fosters. So I am sorry bud but I am going to continue to keep 2 breeds even though it bothers you. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

Joe, Scott, Victor,
I did do the same thing, but I had a mentor that was very tough on me and kinda talked to me in terms that where direct and rough. I responded to that type of advise and demeanor, but that is just me. I know there are some, probably most, that do not respond well to that kind of coaching.
Andrew - I was not singling you out, I know it may have appeared that way, but I wasn't. I want to apologize to you if I offended you in anyway.
155 stated that the new guys should move on to a good topic. I think properly protecting young birds and segregating your lofts is a good topic.
I have said more than enough.....sorry guys. I will move on and upward. ---------- Just My Take On Things

Your right that protecting your young bird’s and segregating your lofts maybe a good topic but that might just be your opinion others may think not and they may think that posting photo’s of there bird’s and asking people there opinion maybe a better one I really can’t say if it’s a good topic on either one because I like to post picture’s of my bird’s to see what people think about what they look like and to show them off cause not everyone can come to my house and see my loft so I like to share. So what would be a good topic? I’m not trying to be rude or anything like that I just would like to know what everyone thinks would be a good topic for us to talk about.but check this out your welcome to come over and see if my birds have roll or not so what do you say? ---------- EVILLOFT'S

GUYS, You have the right to do whatever you want with your birds but,... when you walk around with your pants unzipped someone will notice and tell you about it. Nick has that same right to express his opinion. You have nothing to apologise for my friend. Remember this is ROLLER PIGEON.com not pigeon collectors.com. ---------- V99 Straight up,no chaser.
