Birds will react differently to moult. Some lose control, some get stiff, some dont want to fly.
Would it not be better to just lock down during the moult and let them heal and then resume flying?
What would be the consequences of locking down for moult?
Is there a detriment if you are then able to resume normal flying?

There are many different ideas on what to do during moult. I am under the belief to keep flying them, but just don't "grade" them. Just keep flying them. I do make sure they are on heavy rations with vitamins and mineral added to their diet. ---------- Just My Take On Things

I also heard that it's bad to fly them but then again, I have talked so some good flyers that told me that they just fly them and let them go through it but too also have them health will they are molting. Yes, your gonna have 1 or 2 land early or even not want to fly. Just put it like this imagion a marathon runner with some messed up shoes and put one with good shoe's now witch one will run longer? Thats how I look at it. The only thing you can do just be patient and let them go through it. Expesually if there young bird's. I'm still trying to learn here too. ---------- EVILLOFT'S

I have always flown through the moult but think that this year I will not do it and see what the results are. I will report the results on this post at a later date unless someone comes across with a convincing argument not to.
Note also that I can fly year round so there is no lockdown for me except two weeks during migration at which time I just fly my Orientals.

They should stiffen up if they aren't controlled by the roll, the moult is a good test of charactor, but then it is also a time not be too critical also. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

Moult normally starts in July and runs as long as September. I am playing with forcing the moult this year. We used to do it with chickens. When you are feeding a good balanced mix and change suddenly to cracked corn or scratch it causes almost instant moult. Chickens will complete the moult in a month under these conditions. I will find out about pigeons very soon.

a way i found out to force them to moult is to bring them inside the house for about 3 days to a week.. then put them back into the coop.. this usually forces them to moult in a few day.. well all the ones i tried it on has worked.. i think its the temp. that changes.. ---------- http://www.projeck-.webs.com/

It is "ridiculious to "not" fly during moult.... Have you ever seem a bird in the wild "not" fly when they are in the moult.... Think about it....dah.. Just don't be critical or push them too much. Don't judge them on their flying ability at this time. They need to fly..

I like to cut flying back to every other day when the birds are in the moult. I feel this cuts down on the stress and helps protect new feathers. Tracey

Tracey, I like to cut back a little also. During the molt I will fly them for 2 days and rest them for 1 day. When they are moulting those final primaries often a bird will land early or not want to fly at all and that is okay as long as it does not become a habit. A little extra safflower seems to help them get thru the moult as well. I also do not grade or cull during that period as they sometimes act abnormally during the moult. ---------- Keep em Spinning Joe
