Just bought two sacks of mixed pigeon grain for $27.00 a sack. Very excellant feed. It had corn in it but the corn was smaller than the peas.
My question is they had a triangular grain in the mix that was black in color. Is this a grain called Buckwheat?

Yep that is buckwheat. Birds love it. We plant it for turkeys and doves here in Fl.

hey guys I'm trying to find out how long should i keep my birds caged before I let them out. I have 5 young rollers I've had them caged in the loft for 5 days now which they have access to a screened kit cage. Someone told me to starve them for a day then open the door anf throw feed on the ground they should come out once they do throw feed back in the loft floor and they should go back in. Thet are already use to my whistling to know it's feeding time. I anxious so how long should they stay in before i let them out ??

Newbie.. that sounds lika good time frame to keep them, in the settling cage. Make sure they are trapped traioned before you let them out pon their own and "especially" don't feed them the day before you set them out for their first journey. One more thing I wouldn't throw any feed on the ground. If your going to throw feed, throw it on the kit roof. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

newbie, Paul is right but also don't flag them the first few times out. Give them time to learn where the kitbox or loft is. They will start to make short hops around the yard and back to the box. This is what you want and soon they will go farther and farther, yet still return. Then as soon as they land start the feeding process, let them see you prepare their food tray, place it in the kitbox, replinish the water, then rattle them in. Routine is the key, do everthing exactly the same every day! I hope this helps.

As paul said, I would never throw feed on the ground! They will want to go to the ground and foraging for food, than flying! I ruined my first kit and had to get rid of them. Your young birds will do what the older ones do!
I have a small dog that I send after them everytime they land on the ground! They should only eat when you let them! You control your birds with the feed can!
Like Thom said; "routine, routine, routine"! Be strict with them, your in charge!
Its gets a lot easier when they learn the boundries!---------- Val
