Most birds this pattern are mottle. He looks to be also. A sure ways to tell is to look at individual feathers. If they are one color he is mottle. If they are two colors on the same feather he is spangle.

Hej Lads & Lasses, The above bird is a spangle as it is mainly white, a mottle is a bird that is nearly a self but with mottling ( white )on the wing shields. Eric, Denmark.

Sippi, Thanks for telling how to tell them apart. I never knew a spangle had two colors on one feather and a mottle one.Now I know! Thanks for the pic. Andrew ---------- Tapp

Hej Lads & Lasses, The above bird is a Red Spangle, if a feather has two colours then it could be Grizzle, if one of the Parents was a Grizzle then it could be a Red Grizzle but if both Parents were non Grizzles then it is a Red Spangle there are no two ways about it. Eric, Denmark.

Eric I have always been told that a spangle hatches with its colors and a mottle gets its colors as it moults. I would have called this bird a mottle. This is also a very common color pattern for Rec reds. A spangle would also have a lot of white throughout the chest area. Joe

Hej Joe,Lads & Lasses, I am not concerned about show markings, I am talking about the markings found in the flying B.Roller. I have not heard that before, what you wrote, I also breed a few red spangles and they have all ways been like in the two photos, they are mainly red until the moult, then they moult out to be spangles, that is to say that they are mainly white with varying degrees of red around the neck, shoulders and chest. A mottle is for the most part a self coloured bird with varying degrees of white on the wing shields, as in a typical black mottle for example. Eric, Denmark.
