Character is how a bird acts when it is flown and quality to me is quality of roll or spin (wing position and tightness of roll.) ---------- Sal Ortiz

I think Sal pretty much got it! I would like to add that, for me,character is an exuberant feeling of inner pride the bird emits.Good character birds feathering is always good, they are always in their place in the loft, always have a shine, don't get sick. They are their own masterpiece!....Aloha,Todd

Between Sal and Todd there is not much left I can say. Except, when you walk into the loft some just stand out and you want to handle them. They just have a presence.

Good character to me is also when the bird is not scared or panic when you approach it. ---------- Roll it

Exactly rollsoffury. To tell you the truth, their are some birds in my loft that will have a home forever just because of their great personality and tameness. I should post up a video of me going in my loft and having everybody fly to me.. I don't need to bribe them with food or anything.. If I don't cut their toe nails, pretty much everyday, they'll carve up the top of my head. lol I LIKE IT! :D

I agree with alot said.. For me its the way the bird stands out...The look in its eyes, and overall disipostion. My birds dont like to be handeled, however they are friendy.. this is more of a temperment thing,, but in the loft its the way the bird's stand out...the Charecter..

Good charactor is shown over time, how it handles the roll, kitting, smarts ect. Then you have the ones that stay up late drinking, smoking refer and shooting dice, chasing the hens ect.,these are the lowly charactor ones. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

I agree that there are some birds that just will always have a home, Kopetsa. I have several birds that will always 'greet' me when I enter the loft. Several will come to my feet and peck at me. I have one that will even stand on my foot as I walk around. ---------- scrimpscrampi Tulsa, OK

Bird of character is one that does not display any faults; quick to trap; responds quickly upon liberation; does not panic; seems to be aware of its surroundings all of the time; give you that look as if asking for directions.

Lots of good answers have been given. To me the bird will have a confident air about it that demands respect. I dont like a bird that shys away from the rest and hides in the corners of the loft when I enter. I want a bird that says gome get me. Style is just what was explained earlier. The good ones can show the good style all the time. I dont want a bird that has to be stimulated to roll but rather one that rolls as if for the sheer enjoyment of it. tou, Yes is the answer to your question but there is much more to it than just wing position. You need to factor in the speed and smoothness of the roll. The bird should appear as a ball spinning. Not a lopsided ball or a football but a ball bearing. All of these factors together equall the quality of the birds spin. Tou, Absolutely. A bird that switches wings is a cull. However that doesnt mean you remove it from stock at this time. You just dont put it in your comp team unless you have nothing better to replace it with. And then you should always be looking to replace it when you can. Great post. Unexpected from a bunch of guys. New to the birds, sounds like I have a lot to look forward to.
