A Pensom History"question...when Bob Evans and Perkins and smith and the good Reverend brought BILL PENSON over to visit in the states from ENGLAND,where did he visit??
Old writings said that they brought him over here to teach
THE AMERICAN ROLLERMAN how to fly THE BIRMINGHAM ROLLERS the
ENGLISH WAY. Was it only in NEW ENGLAND for Smith and a few other, and the out to CALIFORNIA??
I also understand that Pensom did not fly competition (other than backyard exhibition for good sized crowds)wehen he was in CALIFORNIA. did he fly any copetition when he was in england??

Evils - You hear a lot of caca and 99% of it is hearsay without any true research done on the subject. It is Bill who showed the Americans the different forms of competition (Both Kit and individual) that happened in England during the time of his youth and most today cannot distinguish then from now. To answer your question the answer is yes he did compete and flew against Bill Patrick, Danny McKenzie, Doug Thorley and a host of other locat PRC and then later local NBRC members locally. He was adimant about individual competition and this is what he bred for. The other part of your question is that Bill visited roller fanciers all across the U.S during his stay here and resided with J. Leroy Smith when he was not traveling to see other roller fanciers. I often wonder about some of the statements that are made about he or she did not do this or that and it is strange. Hugo Blass son has one of the trophies that Bill won and also Danny McKenzie and Bill Patrick had some photo's on competition day. I will try and did up some of the ones Bill Patrick sent me around 1989 that confirms what I am discussing.

Now here are the definitions of competition:

"Competition is the rivalry between individuals (or groups or nations) for territory or resources. It arises whenever two or more parties strive for something that all cannot obtain i.e., the rivalry of two or more parties over something. Competition occurs naturally between living organisms which coexist in the same environment. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates. In addition, humans compete for attention, wealth, prestige, and fame.

Competition can be remote, as in a free throw contest, or antagonistic, as in a standard basketball game. These contests are similar, but in the first one players are isolated from each other, while in the second one they are able to interfere with the performance of their competitors.

Competition gives incentives for self improvement. If two watchmakers are competing for business, they will lower their prices and improve their products to increase their sales. If birds compete for a limited water supply during a drought, the more suited birds will survive to reproduce and improve the population.

Rivals will often refer to their competitors as "the competition". The term can also be used as to refer to the contest or tournament itself. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 8/9/2008)"

Penson flew in competition in England. I have some of the competition reports. when i visited Pensom the first time in 1965, he took me into his bedroom to show me some of the competion tropies he had won. when pensom visited the USA before immigrating permanently, he stayed principally with ROY SMITH on long island . he attended many shows and gatherings in NEW ENGLAND. Chan grover took photographs of those gatherings, with PERKINS,SMITH,PLONA,
THE Spuria brothers, and other in attendance. I can't say wher else Pensom traeled during his one-year visit in the USA, but he visited RUDY GEORGE in Chicago and i believe he visited CALIFORNIA, though i have no information to substantiate that. I GOT the impression he visited the PACIFIC NORTHWEST, to see hein, McCully, and others, but again, no evidence to substantiate it.
PENSOM came over not only to teach AMERICANS how to fly rollers '' english-style,'' but also to scout out the possibillity of immigrating here permanently...
( HOW TURE IS THIS?????)
