Now that I have broken the word in two,you start to see it's true meaning. When there is no EASE,there is DIS---EASE.Stess is the primary culprit not only with ourselves getting sick, but with or birds.Do yourself a favor and your birds,be in a situation of EASE and COMFORT!....Aloha,Todd

Hey Todd,
I didn't get the chance to get to the finals but I was at the regionals for the W/C and most all of Rich's comps for the last 2-1/2 years. Hopefuly you'll get a chance to see his birds fly someday. When they are on, witch is almost everytime I've been there they are quite a team to say the least.

Todd, maybe you should state how to identify stress and how to detect it and how to remedy it. There are severl issues that cause stress and stress comes in many levels. How can a newbie detect, combat it and treat it would be more helpfull.

Todd,
I have 10 pair of birds from Rich that I'm breeding from currently. Most are black and pepperheads and a few grizzles and reds. Some of the young this year are really starting to get with it. It's really nice to have him as the closest flyer to where I live.
How is Rick Shoening doing with his birds?

Jay,good question and let me elaborate.A pro-health plan should be a primary concern to all fanciers.A checklist should be made and adhered to.
You should start with good healthy birds to breed from. For the most part like breeds like, and thats your foundation to start with. The housing to keep our birds is usually a challenge and form will follow economy. If you can emulate natural conditions within the loft,I think that would be a good thing to keep stress on a low level.Once your housing plan is established, avoid overcrowding.Imagine 20 people living in a small one bathroom apartment.I think its fair to say that the conditions would soon become unhealthy.Good ventilation is needed to maintain health, pigeons do pretty well in cold conditions, but you must not expose them to drafts.
Preventive vaccination is key,PMV,Sal-bac,Pox,it can be alot of work initially, but the experienced fanciers have the work cut in half. What I like to do is have pre-loaded syringes in the inside door of my utility refrigerator and I vaccinate them at the weaning stage.
Keep lofts clean, uncluttered, perches scraped and develop a sense of when you need to dis infect.Isolate any birds that show signs of illness, they will naturally be picked on by others and don't get their fair share of food and clean water to drink from.Birds that show major signs of illness, weight loss, puffed feathering, dis colored loose dropping, hanging out by the drinkers, late for the feed call, are probably at the 50/50 stage because the illness has a foot hold in the organs.I very rarely see a regularly fully vaccinated bird in this state.

Jay,I do not advocate combating stress because it is the adverse conditions and our own ignorance which provided that outcome in the first place, combating will just bring about more of the same. However I do advocate a pro--health,preventive maintenance program that will keep our pigeon full of vitality and health for years of our enjoyment, and most of all keep stress at a low level and Dis---ease at bay.....Aloha,Todd
