My birds refuse to fly and just bum around and sit ontop of my pine tree. Iv tried throwing stuff at them and scaring them but nothing seems to work.

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. The birds are young and still peep. So im hoping they will grow out of this stage.

Or should all these birds be culled?? If they don't wanna fly should I encourage them to stay ontop of the loft instead of the trees??

I have put them in a pigeon crate and take them a little way from the kit box and release them sometimes that works to get lazy birds to fly.In the first week I will let them land in odd places. It normaly takes a day or too and they pick up on where they can land.If they have bad habits and I can't break them from it soon thier gone.Tony

If you have a bunch of squeakers in there them they are too young. The older ones you can take them a few houses up and let them go. Hang in there because they will start flying before long. It will only take a week or two and the older ones should be flying around. When they stop squeaking they will be flying like crazy.

Cool thanks for the advice. I don't want to get rid of them because I just got these birds to start with and only have 6 of them! They all peep...could it be feed?? That is not making them want to fly??

If they all squeak them they are just too young. Young birds need to be feed up so don’t short them on food. Feed them all they want for 5 minutes after you have flown them, never fly them just after feeding them. Feed after flying to train them to go back into the kit box right away. Once they start flying and fly too long then you can cut back on the feed.

Game,
Put em back in the cage for a few more days. Tree sitting is a cullable offense. They have changed thier goal to the tree instead of the sky. Keep em in for a few more days then try em out, hungry. feed the snot out of them two days out then give em a half ration the day before you let them out.Box em up and go three or four houses down the street so they can still see your house. They have to feel the need to reach altitude. You might fly an old hen with them if you have one.

Sounds like you tried to get them to fly the first time out and they took to the trees. I never let them sit any where but the kit box. Teach them that before you try to get them to fly. Life will be a lot easier. Also sounds like you release them not hungry. That gets them to trap right back in. They should take to the air own thier own in a week or so. If you have to flag them up only do it once so they dont get shy of landing on the box. You can also flush them out of the box to encourage them to fly. I dont like to do this because I dont want them to learn to flush every time the door opens. When I have troublesome birds, only after they are trained that the kit box is the only place to land, I will take them in a box ten yards, twenty yards, fifty yards, one hundred yards and so on and let them fly back to the box.

Patience is the main thing.

Game,
To answer your Q? about how much to feed,a little more than 4 ounces(1/2 cup)should do them.Put 6 ounces on the tray, let them eat till they stop, measure what is left over then you'll know what their requirements are.

At that age,I run them through the trap about 20 times each a day per bird, to engrain a new habit into them.Basicly your starting all over from square one.Work with them on a one on one basis,so the bird is focusing on what you want it to do and you are focusing on what you want the bird to do.Give the bird a little whistling sound as he proceeds through the trap door.Keep their mind and their wings active.Training the birds like this from day one will pay dividends.Get the squeaks on the landing board as early as possible....Aloha,Todd

Game you still need to get a handle on the feed can so they trap in instead of sitting in the pine tree. You would be better off with less fly time for a few days than tree sitting. Bad habits are learned at a young age. Sitting out is one of the most dangerous habits they can learn if you have any BOP problem what so ever.

Kept the birds pretty hungry and today they all flew and came straight back down on the loft!! No bumming around on the trees. I guess you guys were all right its all about the feed!

I was impressed!!
