Hi, Eggs do not hatch for one of two reasons. Either they are infertile or the egg is fertile but the embryo dies before hatching. Usually I find an infertile egg is liquid when you shake it. While the chick inside that dies will be a solid egg when shaken. Either way it will stink if you break them open. LOL So if you have liquid it is the cock bird and do not treat with medicine unless it is for fertitliy.
The two main problems will be for an fertile egg that dies is Salmonella and Chlamydia. I could be worng but Often your birds will be exposed to many diseases and build up a natural immunity against the germs that persist at your loft. The embryo and young chicks can often get the disease and die. They too will get immunity from the parrents milk and feed. ( pigeon milk really is a protein like cottage cheese subtance) anyway If you just have this happen once in a while I would not treat the birds. If it happens alot then you may want to consider treating your birds with medication. I personally do not treat with medication at all. I like the natural immunity to build up. Just make sure you keep your cages clean, dry and fresh water daily and you should be OK. You could get some good gut bacteria and put that in the water just to keep things going good. It is kind of like us eating yogurt that has live culture active bacteria. It is germs but good germs and the pigeons in the same way need good gut bacteria especially after using anti-biotics. But use caution with treating birds as many try and treat sick birds that die anyways and germs build up immunity when they are not used properly. good luck, hope your next round of eggs come out healthy. Cristian, I can't imagine pigeons not eating grit but if you ask that question it must be true. My birds love greens and persalane weeds but others told me there birds won't eat greens.
They need grit unless you feed pellets. THen they don't need the grit. But if you feed grain and they are not eating grit, I would suggest getting a few of those grit blocks with minerals. I have some called Beyers and German brand grit blocks. They are filled with small rocks, oyseter shell and salts and minerals in a mud cake and dried. The birds go nuts for them. I gave some to a friend and he said, " I don't know what was in those blocks you gave me but the birds devoured them in five minutes. That will get them eating grit for sure. See if Tony has any of them. Bill C

dang Andy, do you ever sleep? LOL
When we were kids all our pigeons got sand. we knew they like it by watching the feral barn pigeons in a field. we would go out to a sandy place and shovel a couple scoops in a bucket and take it back to the loft. they loved it.
But, ..I now prefer the red grit with anise scent and iodine and several other minerals. If you can get it, thats the way to go. If not, then sand will work, just make sure its clean and you`ll have to give them the vitimens and minerals by other means.
