Fly times are a matter of conditioning and feed and enviroment. Fed up heavy I have found that they will fly an hour and a half or more. This is not reccomended as they are a target as long as they are in the air. They also dont trap easily when over fed. For comp times I like mine to fly thirty to fourty five minutes then I know they wont get the big DQ. If I could get a perfect fly time of thirty minutes then I am happy.
Young birds will fly less when they are building muscle. That is where conditioning comes in. As long as they fly more each day I dont mind how short the first flys are as long as they improve over time. After about three weeks they should be making decent times.

When I started with my first kit, they were just young and still flying inconsistantly. I introduced them to millet one evening and the next evening when I let them out, they flew for hours. I put out lights on the loft, but they were scared to come down and they flew till they gave out I guess. I was going out and checking every 30 min or so and I could shine the spot light in the air and see white wing tips flicker in the sky. This went on till like 10:30 or 11:00p.m., finally I started hearing them crash landing in the trees. The next day, most came in. Think I lost 4 if I remember right.
I have since added millet back to the diet, but they get it from the time their born in the breeders loft and the kits only get a little when I give them their mix once a week or so.I usually don't fly them for a day or two after they get mix!
I prefer about 30-40 min fly time! Now that its so hot, I'm lucky to get 20.

Just curious because I timed my young birds today and they flew for only about 11 minutes.

hey Val you on your days off? I have experimented with fly times and different times of the day. I fly mostly in the evening and during July and August I only get ten to twenty minutes when it is sweltering. I also tried switching to mornings and that was a catastrophe. The birds were conditioned for evening flying in the heat and wouldnt come down. They flew from nine in the morning til two in the afternoon. I went back to evening flying.

I start back tonight, 4 nights in a row! I have been promoted to a field technician position. Just waiting for our main office in Houston to fill my old spot and I should work days mostly from now on. I will occasionally have to go back in to cover vacations until the new guy can be trusted to work alone. It takes awhile to trust someone to open and close valves alone with a 15,000 bbls/hr rate moving through the line! LOL The pay increase will be nice, but now I'm on call 24/7! >:(
I just fly in the evenings and stay consistant as I can with them. I have tried a few mornings and they want to fly way too long! I usually get an attack if they stay out that long! ---------- Val

I have had a kit of birds fly up to 3 hours. It is not uncommon for my teams to fly for 1.5-2 hours during the moult...due to the fact that they are being fed up. That is if the morning is nice and cool.
It really depends on how much you feed and the weather...on cool days and extra feed they will be out for longer periods.
During the training for a comp...30-45 minutes the should be back in the kit box... That has to do with feed control.

Guys I like for mine to fly in the 45 minutes to an hour range. They have to fly for twice as long as their performance time. By doing this on a regular basis you`ll insure that they dont get tired and land early on you. A good working kit should be pretty much used up at the hour mark. This is why it is neccessary to set a time,a mark for the end of the fly. Most sporting events have a clear end to the game. Why should ours be any different? Remember they are our birds and we control what they do in the air thru breeding and proper management. Use a flag or a dropper, its the easiest way. I have a feed bag on a eight foot stick of 5/8 conduit. Put em up hungry and when they try to land flag em back up til they get to the mark you want. Drop the flag and feed em. After a week they will respond to the flag being dropped This simple Pavlovian training will key them to the flag. Droppers works the same way but you put him out when you want them to come down. Put the dropper out as they start circling low, shake the feed can from an out of sight area. After a few days they will associate the dropper with the feed.
My squeaker team got really lazy on mea nd I had to use the flag to get them conditioned to fly for more than a few minutes. After a few days of flagging them they now fly close to an hour. The dropper is starting to work now it takes em a few minutes to wind down but they usually come down in ten minutes or less. Took about two weeks.
