This Cock comes from Jay Starleys Birds in Utah. I got him from one of the Club fliers that are flying his stuff. I also got a hen. They have given me 4 red birds and 2 blue checks.
I am wondering what color this is and why the young are red? The hen carries the red to it just doesn't show as much.

It is spread ash red split for blue and expressing dirty, sooty and lots of kite bronze because it carries recessive red. This color is actually fairly common in the close up Pensom line of birds. I have several friends with birds just like this and I have raised some myself.

Thanks BA. For your info this bird carries Rec Red, and some weird mix to make ash blue, lol?
Jay Starley got his birds direct from Pensom 20 years or so ago. I don't know for sure. He told me got them from Pensom and has never crossed them. The two were my first good birds. I only flew them for a couple of weeks, then they nested. They were 20 footers, good style, good velocity. They only kitted with them selves so who knows. they did not have any one else to fly with.
I will test them this winter when I break up my breeders.

It is my understanding Jay's birds are decendents of birds he acquired from John Destout.

According to "Keys To Flying Competition Rollers" you are correct. They are an "old Pensom Line. John Destouet collected them from his good friend, Ralph Hilton." I thought I had an email saying he (Jay) had talked with and gotten birds from Pensom, but I can not find that and I could be mistaken. Confused as we newbies get when we overwhelmed with all the pigeon info.

RT,
Do you find your Starleys on the large side?

My seem comparable in size.
I have Campbell/ billings, Some Clay Hoyle birds, and The Jay Starley pair. I would say the Cocks are very similar in size. My Starley Cock is a little wedgier in appearance.
My Starley hen is actually a little bigger(longer and probably heavier) than the other hens. Could just be her though.
