Fertility of the cocks and viability of the eggs is severely reduced with the onset of the moult. Some birds wont produce at all and some dont seem to be affected. July first is a good target date to stop breeding and then put them back together in October if your climate supports it and you still want to breed.

Mario,

As you get closer to warm weather the bacteria levels go up.
This is why you need to stop breeding before this happens
and as stated before the moult sets in.
The best way to get fertile eggs is to clean your hens out first and keep them clean through breeding season.
Here in Ohio I breed from December - April.
I worm my breeders and put them on a 4-1 treatment and most important I use tamed Iodine in the water to kill the bacteria in the hens ovums about once a week tru the breeding season.
This will keep the eggs from taking on bacteria and turning black and the young will also not die in the nests.
I saw all the meds you need here on this site.
Good luck this breeding season and don't over use your hens to long.

I have birds that will breed all through the moult and winter whatever and never show any bad effect on their health or the young. But then some other pairs just can't take the stress and they need a break.Al kinds of different things will happen.Eggs get kicked out of the nest, eggs go black, some cocks will turn cannniballistic, while other birds just keep raising young all year like nothing happens.Basiccally if you want to keep birds breeding after july you had better keep a close eye on what is going on in your breeder loft and be prepared to remedy any bad s-it going on in there when it happens.----------
