A few days ago, I posted about my young birds (1.5 months) landing on the ground. Well - I stopped that habit. Cut back on the feed a bit too. And things were going well up until tonight...

As soon as I released them from the training basket they went straight up into a very tall tree. Both my husband and I spent 30 minutes pitching koosh balls up there, and even got out the hose...but nothing phased them. They would not come down until they wanted to.

I really do NOT want them perching in trees. Any advice on flushing birds out of a really tall tree? Besides tennis balls or koosh balls...something that makes more of an impact but would not hurt a bird or break the neighbor's attic window?

Thanks in advance!
~Karen

Ive used a plastic shopping filled with dirt, this works well .. just have to be careful not to get it stuck in the tree could end up being kinda a eye sore.. I have found that scaring reluctant bird's some times makes the confortable with it... be careful.. and goodluck...

Try tossing an empty milk jug with a handfull of rocks in it. It gets quite noisy as it goes through the brances!

One of the FORS members has a water balloon sling shot. I am hunting one but will probably get in trouble with it sooner or later. LOL

Iv tried the hose, tennis balls, soccer balls, footballs, grocery bag with tennis ball inside, sticks and so on....

Nothing will scare the birds enough. They will eventually get used to whatever your throwing at them and just kinda make you look like a fool to your neighbors/tire you out.

Feed in my opinion is the only way.... keep them hungry for 1.5 - 2 days and then see what happens. Otherwise take them in a basket and let them out where there are no trees around to get them to fly...

I had them pretty hungry already. Skipped feed for 1.5 days, fed very little the next. They were behaving great until last night with the tree :(

A really desperate measure is those screechers with a firecracker in them.I use them alot to scare off you know who and they work good for that. You can hold them in your hand(carefully)and aim them pretty accurate.

Kel, use a brake line tubing about couple of feet long. It will give you a great aim. You can purchase that from any car parts store.

Hay Crazy (lol), your birds are not ready to take off just yet. When they are ready, they will go.

However, have you tried to worm them. It is possible that they have worms which is causing them to have sourness in the wing joints and it is painfull.

Otis, that's a brilliant idea and will definitely not risk breaking the neighbor's attic window. Thanks!!!

Karen,
I haven't had that problem for a while but when I did a paint ball gun will reach the top of the tallest pine. I like the balloon idea, Otis, I'm gonna file that one back.

I have a bottle of helium so I will try that one. Going through South Carolina in a couple of weeks so I think I will get some bottle rockets and fire them through a pipe. Since I live in the jungle and it is really wet I wont have a problem.

Otis Snake Dr. & Sippi - I tried the helium balloons tonight and it worked great for scaring them off the neighbors' rooftops, as well as out of the trees.

The balloons are a little hard to control and I looked like a complete fool running around with them, lol. But hey it really did the trick!! I think in a couple more days they will learn to stay in the air.

Sadly though - two of my young birds got spooked by a hawk & didn't come back this evening. I know one of them is in a tree in the yard. Not sure where the other one went but I really, really hope they both come back tomorrow. I only have 8 birds and one of them I already pulled from the kit for misbehaving.
