I have most of my birds going through the molt and some have been acting strange.

Some that kit always now land early or non kit.

Some got too deep and bounce.

Some got sloppy on the roll coming out.

I kept flying them and some I rest for a few weeks like the deep ones and the the ones that didn't wanted to kit. They all seem to got better now but I still notice that they still are in to the molt. How long does it usually last? I have one problem bird still and is the one coming out of the roll nasty. Like he wants to pull out but doesn't. He had a real clean, smooth roll before. I check his primary wings and they are coming out they still have blood. Will this still be a issue affecting the quality of the roll? He is 9 months old and always been a good kit bird.

Personally I dont fly mine while the primaries are in the blood quill stage. But yes it will affect the roll. Imagine an ingrown toenail on your foot and walking with it. Similar situation.

yeah and that can be painful, I rest them too when they are in that blood stage. give a lot of oil seeds. this is a good time for me to judge there mentality some will be control by the roll they will crash some will not roll at all fight the urge to roll they control the roll. but all and all is still painful and some will roll down because of it.just feel them out if they don't want to fly let them rest.but you can help them get through the moult faster..this is the time i put Epsom salt in the bath helps with the healing, ----------

Levi's "The Pigeon" has a chart in it that tells when a bird will moult which feather feather by feather based on six birds as a sample group. Great reading I will see if I can copy it and post it.

yea quickspin I have had some go trough to molt hard... what I have done is take the really bad ones and put them in a seprate kit box if avilible,, and get some peanut oil,, or safflower oil and apply a heaping table spoon to their feed can ration be sure the seed is kinda shalacked with the oil. Only feed as much as they will consume withen reason... Do this every other feeding for a week, the dropping will go loose.. after this you should notice a huge diffrence. The birds will shine and kinda be slick to the touch, and alot more snappy in their disposition.. it's worked for me hope this helps... oyea it works for bird's not in the moult also. good luck

You may consider using vitamins, minerals and addition, because feathers are made of protein, you must add extra protein in their feeding. Increasing the peas, adding saflower, the use of oil as mention prior and a immune booster.

Booker your post reminded me of something that happened to a friend a while back. She went on vacation and had a friend feed the birds for her. The "feeder" got the dose of wheat germ oil confused and gave them ten times the amount. When she returned two weeks later the birds looked like oil soaked rags. It took about a month to get them back to normal but at least they couldnt get wet.

The Molt is when the birds put on a fresh coat and get rid of the old late summer and fall is molting time but in reality the birds are molting all year but heavy molt is once a year thats the time the bird are replacing the feather that will serve them for another year. now most kit birds go through the molt with little difficulty others will have kitting problems depending on the family that you have some will roll down because its painful especially when the last three primary are in the blood stage. I usually pull my birds out from the kit until they grow them back they go back to being them self again with the rest you know good habits they had like kitting well and what not....If the whole team is having problem i rest them for a week or two increasing the protein intake to help build good feathers more oil seeds.. this the the time they need more attention and you learning this will make you a better trainer in knowing your birds when they need that extra attention if they don't wanna fly stay in the kit box when you open it don't force them out find out whats wrong if they were always coming out fine..learn your birds they will teach you ..hope this helps ..good luck ..and remember no question is a dumb one when you are learning. and remember what Sippi said above " Imagine an ingrown toenail on your foot and walking with it. Similar situation.." how would you like me to make you run like that..always feel for your birds. they are not robots...whats your name by the way..
