Are pigeons really as dirty as people say they are? Do you think pigeons are flying rats? Can you get sick from your own birds?

I dont think my pigeons are as dirty as they have been portrayed as in the past I believe my birds are farly clean I also have never gotten sick form my birds because i like to clean out my loft and i vacinate and do every thing to insure healthy birds seeing as a birds droppings are its first sign so i check every day on the droppings and if i even see one with the symptoms the whole loft gets treated

Pigeons sanitary habits are not the best. Therefore it is up to us as keepers to assist them in thier cleanliness efforts. You can get pigeon lung from the dust and minute feathers that float around in the lofts if they are kept in enclosed lofts.

Regularly cleaning your loft and fresh water go a long way to good pigeon health.

I would say your more likely to get Disease and sickness from people than pigeons! Except for pigeon dust, And thats up to the loft manager!

I agree with Tapp. Your way more likely to get sick from other humans than you are your 'own' pigeons.. Pigeons are not flying rats!

Keep the loft dry and the birds out of a draft. Good ventilation in the loft is a must. any dampness in the loft just breeds bacteria, mold, etc. Keep the mice out, give them clean water and good food and you should be good to go.

" can you get sick from your own birds?" Sure you can,but you can just as easily get sick from your pet dog, cat, turtle, horse, etc.

I think it boils down to the management... I have seen some EXCELLENT ROLLERS!!!! but they were kept under poor conditions... One good scare as far as sickness will cange a poor managers habit's quickly... I personally keep my loft really dry... I use Dry stall... and I use garden/ Poultry powder on all the serfaces after I scrape... this goes a long way.. it keeps the bugs down and keeps the loft nice and dry... I really dont need to clean every week but I do.. It is up to you to provide the enviroment... and keep in mind that you are representing pigeons in general... The one piece of advice I recieved by a old hand was paint your lofts,,, makeum look good because there are alot of people that look down on our pet's and it's up to us to proveum wrong with the way we keepum,,,, and this is comming from a guy that raised outta a shopping cart.. ME..LOL Long ago... but it looked good.....

Square, A ShOPPING CART!!!! Man, I can't beleive I didn't think of that when I was a kid. Lucky for the supermarket, they would have been missing alot of carts and I would have had critters penned up everywhere in them. Hey if ya think about it,you were flying from a mobile loft before they became popular!!! LOL!!!

LOL yea dry stall is kinda like cat litter... used for horse and live stock pins.. You can usally pick it up from your local feed store,,, thats what i used to get.. However I have found that the stuff from the auto parts store works just as good and way cheeper..Plus it wont hurt the birds... if you havent used it before your birds might peck at it for a while then they learn that it's not food. Now the poultry/garden powder you can get from the feed store also... it comes in a white cilender and it has a picture of acouple of chickens they are white... I just sprinkle some on the loft floor before the dry stall... Another alternitive to this is garden powder you can get this at the hardware store... its alittle cheeper however just as effective... I think tony might have some for sale on the site here... Ill take a peek... hope that helped explain. As far as the pics of the cart NOPE...LOL

Oldfart,, looks like Tony has the same type of stuff in (pigeon products) it's called prozap... man this stuff works really well.... I really see the results as I live where ther are alot of flys and ant's... O yea I also use it because I end up sleeping in the dirt,, alot when fighting fires.. so i carry a little bottle of it in my pack... and just sprinkle it around my chunk of dirt... it's not that im afraid of bugs or anything,, but after a bug crawled into one of the bro's ear's I kinda started being alittle more Conserned..LOL
