I have a 3 week old squab, on one of its feet he stands on the outer toe, its folded under and he walks on it.. when you look at the foot it looks normal, but when he stands that outer toe goes under.. what do you think??

I don't think its my nest either..
I start them off with sand so the eggs don't roll around, once the eggs hatch and the little buggers poop everywhere I change the sand to pine shavings. also, I have not had any issues this is the first..

funny foot

Nice bird!
I am not sure you will be able to fix that. I might be wrong. I guess you can give him time and see..

The eggs have to roll around a bit so the babies will develop properly. :)

Yea I think kopseta is right about the egg having to be able to move around a lil. I think the mom even will rotate the egg at times...

When you put the band on leg, was the toe already hooked under? Was it real tight to band foot? Pulling toes through band on bigger youngsters could have done damage. Good Luck JDA

I would try mannyfresh's idea of a splint. Tape the foot spead in the correct position to a small flat piece of wood ASAP before it develops further. Leave it on for 2-3 weeks. If that doesn't work, it was probably a birth defect.

Arlen and Manny, right on. Try the splint. He is still growing and developing. It might be worth a shot and it looks like you got a couple weeks before he needs to hit the kitbox. After that if it dont work I think I`d cull it. If you got a wire bottom in your kitbox that bird will have a terrible time on the wire. probably even get himself stuck if it aint careful. At that point culling would be easiest on him.

A wire paper clip bent to the shape of his foot and taped for a week or two should solve the problem. Make the paper clip like it has a leg on it so you can tape that to his leg. Just be sure not to tape it too tight.

That foot will not bother the bird when it's flying in your kit, don't worry about unless it starts happening alot.

This season I got three youngsters that way. One of them has this issue in both feet. They are doing fine in the wire bottom (1”x2”) of the kit box. I wouldn’t cull a bird because of cosmetic appearance. If it doesn’t show the performance that I am looking for, then and only then it will be removed.
