Hi All, I have had pigeons on and off all my life. I raced homers with a Detroit Mi. club in the seventies. I retired last year and with more time on my hands I got back into Pigeons. My first love as a boy was rollers. So I bought some from different breaders in the area.I had them flying well, and was really enjoying them.I found that many nights I would get flu like symtoms, and feel sick. But in the mornings I felt better. This has been going on for a while now.Kept going to the Doctor but could not shake it.
Then after reading here about pigeon lung, I read up on it. And that is what I had, at age 62 it would hit me hard. So due to that and all the hawks in the area I got red of all my rollers. It breaks my heart, cause I miss them alot. I will still visit this site and read all about Rollers.

Iam thinking of trying that next year. But Icould not have nest boxes. And I was thinking of just keeping 4 or 6 but then when the hawk hits Iam really hurting. Also from what i Read it is one pigeon or 100, it could effect me. At my age it doesn't take much to set it off.One guy told me to hose out the kit box once a week and wash it down with water.

Also sorry to hear about the health issues you`re having. I`m afraid others here might have the same issues some day. All we can do is heed the warning and remember , great ventillation is as important to us, as it is to the birds.
I also wonder if a very well ventillated kit box would still be a problem. And then the idea about hosing it out every week , if not more, would also help. It would be tough to have to give up the birds for any of us, but our health is something we all have to deal with individually. Good luck with whichever you decide to do.

Hey, Hifly - that is a sad story. Without our health, nothing else matters. I know this first hand, always heard it, lived it, so I'm sorry that your passion is the cause of your health problems.

On a lighter note, have you tried owning a parrot? We just got an African Grey and the plan is to teach him to fly outside, as soon as we train him. He is soooo much fun -- a pigeon with a personality! He flies to me on command (most of the time) and performs antics. He's only 3 months old so he hasn't started talking yet, but when he does, what fun!

I have thought of getting one pigeon and keep it in the house, but the wife will have no part of that.Back in the early fifties my Dad kept one barn pigeon in the house as a pet and we all enjoyed it, even the cat.
I really like hearing about other fanciers with the same problem.

11, sorry to hear about your health. Have you thought about helping some kids get involved with rollers? With your knowledge and background you could help them get a good start and still enjoy your birds as you watch the kids grow in the hobby. Just a thought.

I miss my birds alot, today I called the guy I gave them to and he said I could come and get them back any time. I think tommorow. And then I will go to the paint store and get a good mask to use around the coup.
