I just really got more into other people and their birds. and this is mostly from the comp aspect... However I have noticed that alot of people look down on bigger rollers... I have had people see my rollers and stock, and say that they liked the smaller ones however if I showed them the parents they would say unknowling they are too big,,, Do alot of you folke think you need all smaller rollers to breed small rollers??? for me and my family... Some of the biggest make what most call Ideal or typeie... Can a larger roller be typie???? I know what it is for me, in my opion and minds eye,,, just wondering what you folks think... This is my opion and only mine... I like a strong roller in wing chest and back... I understand the whole eveloution thing espically in respects to the B.R.. However It is with my experince that when I hold a prized roller outta some people's loft they feel great,,, however they are more of a plum or peach feel rather than a apple... I know this was only a rule of thumb from the past however I like the apple feel... maby the greats should hav been more specific on the type of apple they were reffering too.... LOL as there are so many diffrent kinds nowdays... Eveloution agian plays apart as I can assure you we have alot more types of apples today than before.... Just a thought... are we now looking for smaller apples!!!!!!!!??????....

Yea I agree with the biger roller got smaller thing, but some of my bigest make my smallest... and I accept this,,, however I really enjoy the oddness of this and plan to keep it... I have some bigger birds that roll really good... I have also seen some pics of the great birds of the past and reconized the size onum.. I really dont mind the small dove type roller but with my perticular family it take the bigun's to makeum... so I will never strey from that... thanx for all the positive feed back ... and Paul send me you e-mail info....

I always thought my rollers were huge but after I see everyones else.. mine are the same or even smaller.. I like them to have nice heavy back skull and a nice big chest. With a short tail too.

JMO, I do not think size matters at all. I have seen big rollers and small roller do very extremely well.

We have a lot of wind here in Okla.. I don't like my birds too small! The seasons are just now changing and wind will play a big factor in my training. Since the WC and the FF are in the spring and fall, I figure that the odds are high that I will have wind on fly day.

Get your mind out of the gutter Norlan! LOL Why would I care about the size of anything else? Just ornaments on a tree at my age!

Like wise elictric guy, the wind is heavy in my parts also... I have found that the bigger birds handle the conditions better... Also when it come to breakingum down,,its alot of less impact onum when they have alittle more ass onum...

I have not been raising roller long enough to tell. But, with my bantams. If I hatch my birds in the first part of the year(Jan., Feb., March) they will be bigger and not the best type. But,if I hatch in April and May my birds tend to be smaller and better type. Just wondering do you all think this may hold true for rollers too.

Hey Square, How are you doing? I told my wife that I met you at Visalia and told her your story and how you got into the fire fighting. She thought it was inspiring. As to the size aspect of the rollers, I think it has something form follows function. It also has something to do with moving mass, the small apple bodied bird that has its mass near its center of gravity, once it gets moving the speed can be maintained easier. If the mass is moved away it will take longer for it to start moving and takes more strength to get started. Awhile back there was a thread about keels, length, and placement,it all ties into the whole picture. I have seen big birds that can spin fast, really fast, but a small bird will always look faster,so the illusion is part of our perception. I try not to worry about it too much cause if they are spinning right and balanced its all good. It's still a mental condition we are trying to control, the right kind of body makes easier.

Inbreeding will make your birds become smaller in size no matter how big the original parents are.

Anthony hit on a good point also. Late hatch as a rule will be smaller than the birds hatched in the spring. The moult, plus wear and tear on the parents makes them not feed as well later in the year.

Question:
If you take a golf ball and a basketball and put them side by side and roll them across the floor, count the number of revolutions that each one makes in 10 feet.
The golf ball ( or smaller roller ) will turn over many more times and be much more tighter and faster than the bigger one.
So when someone with a larger bird that rolls say, 10 feet, and someone with a smaller bird rolls the same distance, which one do you think is the tighter faster roller?
As for the smaller birds not being as good in heavy winds??? --- In my experience, simply not true, sorry.
