I was curious how many of you guys flag your birds up, or use a flag to get them back up if they try landing early. I have some young birds that have been flying good for a couple months flying them every morning, but occasionally they want to land on top of the garage and not fly. most times they go right up and some days they don't. Maybe it's the moult??

I use the flag on occasionally ,when i want them to fly the time that i want to put in them ..or if i want 5 more minutes.but I am very careful with young birds they will land else where so you have to be on your toes when you see they going to land else where..quickly blow the feeding whistle so they come land on your roof or whistle loud with your mouth if you know how to whistle to scare them before they land on unwanted places...learn when they need rest. Now an experience flyer will notice when his birds are moulting and give them the attention they need like rest the right kind of feed,vitamins..so be careful good birds can and will be ruin because of an inexperience flyer .have patience let your birds teach you ,learn from them ... be there master don't let them master you.. good luck..

The birds are trying to tell you something. You are the coach and need to find out what are they telling you. Is it possible the heat of the day causing them to not want to fly, is it that you are not keeping up with their water and flying thirsty, is the molt hitting them pretty hard, are they extremely hungry, were they wormed, is it the same bird comes down first and bring the rest of kit down with it, are they panting hard when landing!!! There are many possibilities and you need to figure out why.

I have used a flag in the past to train younger rollers... However I have found that a firm hand on the feed can goes a long way and works alot better than the flag consistantly. I try to train my bird's to fly for reward,, that means when the kit box is opend all they want to do is fly, then come's reward the feed... the time they fly is controled by the amount of feed .. If I cant control then with the use of the feed can then I dont needum.. A little flagging or flushing in the begining is ok... but i break away from this ASAP... pigeons are creatures of habbit,,, it's up to us to make those good or bad....

If none of the above apply and they still won't fly,use a gallon bucket 1/2full of water and swing it onto the roof with all your might!!!Be prepared for the WIFES abuse afterwards!!

Thanks guys for the tips. Since I fly early morning I knew it wasn't the heat, and they always have water, I asked the man I got these birds from if maybe I was overflying them, and he said no I was probably overfeeding them, and suggested swiching to straight milo for a couple weeks and not overfeeding. I think this is probably what has happened. I'm also feeding a mix and maybe they are getting a little lazy on it. My mistake I guess small changes yield big results when it comes to feeding.

Overfeeding will make you birds fly for hours on end and don't want to trap easily. You have other issue besides feeding too much. Don't just scratch the surface, look deeper. Putting your birds on Milo right now when you don’t know the cause might lead to disastrous outcome.

Try and fly them on different times and see if they still do the same thing. When was the last time you wormed your birds? Check your kit box for red mites. They come out when it gets dark. Believe me your birds are telling you something.

Thanks J Star.

I'm going to look deeper. Straight milo turned roll on high gear, and caused some roll downs. I'm gonna try something else. Birds have been wormed. I'll check for mites.
