Down side they drink lots and lots of water.
Upside great for raising squeaks.
It is a matter of cost mostly.
Turkey pellets here are very pricey.
Hog pellets are more than layer pellets but I like them better.
My birds dont care for chicken layer pellets.
All do a good job of raising squeaks.
I feed hog pellets to my flyers in a mix also.
A lot is personal preference.
Some say pellets make a worse smell but I havent noticed that much difference.

I use Swansons pigeon pellets 28% for my breeders and I cut them with 1 part wheat and 1 part milo....end for every 2 parts I add 1 part sauflower. Most pigeon pellets are lower is salt the other pellets. I use pigeon pellet because the are formulated for pigeons and they are loaded with vitamins.
As for water consumption...I really have not noticed a difference...it is minimal...that I have noticed.
Babies grow better on them....I even feed them to my kit birds....but I cut them too with other grains..I like them...but during the winter my all my birds get the standard mix from Winners cup...at 16.5% I feel the hard grains are better for the winter for keeping warm.

It all depends on what part of the country YOU live in,as to what brand of pellets you can get. I've tried many types of pellets and the main thing I don't like is the consistance of the pellet. Mostly they crumble too easily, lots of powder in the bags. The pigeons won't eat the powder. So,you are paying for feed the birds won't "eat". Unlike pigeon pellets, they stay firm in the bag and don't crumble easily. Sodium content is the biggest problem to me. I've noticed that pellets with a higher sodium content relates to "more" water consumption. And also the droppings have a more pungent "SMELL".
