Hi everyone. I came home from work last Wed. to find my husband taking care of a pigeon. We got the band number; VPRC NPRC 2008 1174 and have tried to find it's owner. Not sure what gender it is, though we've taken to calling it Lil Fella (my husbands name for all critters no matter the sex). Fella is holed up in husbands (Bob) garage, pooping, eating, walking and flying. He has fresh water and food all day (Bob is retired).

If we don't hear from an owner, we are considering keeping him HOWEVER we know no more about caring for pigeons than we do polar bears. Bob thinks he is lonely without a kit to play with. Do these birds do better with other pigeons? Can we tame it to be a pet? I know birds are very smart. Can we let him fly and if we do will he come back, etc?

We need advice and quick! : )

Thanks and pleased to meet you!

Hi Cindy;
If the bird is a racing homer he might try to find his way home after a little while. If it is any other variety (ie) roller or show bird he can be tamed to stay with you providing he is a very young bird. Whether an older bird will remain with you is a crap shoot. They can make very good pets but naturally like to have a little company of their own kind. Letting himfly puts him in danger of being eaten by hawks or owls! Good luck to you and Bob. Al Perron

Thanks, Al! We were told that the bird is a Birmingham Roller. I have pictures of him. I will post them in the gallery.

Keep it,feed it ,tame it,enjoy it's company.Let it fly after a couple weeks and if you let him out hungry(only feed him a tablespoon 24 hours before you release him) he should come back to you.Seeings how Bob is retired,why not build a small loft for the bird,and get one or two more to keep each other company and have a family.Mate him with another Birmingham Roller to keep the breed going.
