can some explain the reason for foster birds for me? I know these are birds that sit on the eggs of other pairs to hatch feed nurture the babies of other birds but is the purpose to continue to fly the pairs who originally laid the eggs or for the original pairs to continue to produce more eggs to get as many babies from the pairs because of the quality of birds you are looking for may be in the pair who's producing the eggs or both ??? I know this is a dumb question but do you throw out the foster pair eggs

If you have enough fosters you can get a pair of eggs out of a good producing pair every ten days. Thats way quicker than raising a pair of squeaks every five to eight weeks.

If the main breeders are good birds, keep them in and safe. Its fall now and the sharks are starting to show up! They get more and more skilled as the winter goes on!

You use fosters to help get more of your birds out. You shouldn't be flying your breeders just raising more from them with the aid from the fosters. Like it was mentioned above you can get a lot more from your breeders in shorter time.

how many pairs of birds are you breeding from and how many rounds do you let them go for? You can use any king of pigeons that foster well. Some use homers which are great parents and can foster up to three young. Others use rollers. Ive used rollers, my own breeders, just decided I wanted more from another pair.

Even with only 6 pair of breeders there will be 1 pair that either has produced better, or you expect will produce better than the rest. Always maximize your best pair. Foster out the first 2 rounds of eggs then let them raise the 3rd.
I always rate my breeder pairs 1-12. 1-3 get eggs fostered out. 9-12 almost never raise a round. Any pair 4-12 will get used for a foster if needed for pairs 1-3.

I am very careful about what I introduce into my loft. I do not want to introduce any disease.

Yes, homers can make good foster parents. They will feed the babies more and keep them really plump, problem is getting the babies through the first few days. They are so heavy, the squish the babies if you stick your hand in there and get them excited. I wouldn't put them in the same loft either, they are bigger and will torment the smaller rollers. If I was gonna use homers, I would use them in indepndant breeding cages so they keep calm and more relaxed. Leave them alone until the babies are a week old or so.

yes the hen has a number which is fixed at birth. just make sure you don't wear your hen out the hen should get plenty of fresh water and grit good quality feed as well as a calcium tablet at least every other day to help with the egg formation.health is good super health is better.

Brian whats up..long time good to see you posting again.

fresno, just fyi, the ones on the street are not the same as homers. The ones on the street are wild commies, the ones you may have seen at the feed store are domesticated pigeons, probably racing homers.
