In a post you told Kopetsa/Andrew that 90% wheat & 10% milo is a good feed for young pigeons ? what does wheat Do? Does wheat take them up? I was told that years ago. an what mix do you use at weaning an flying young birds? I have tried so many different feedings but never 90% wheat an 10% milo this may be the key, is this feeding good for young birds thats in to the roll/spin say 5-6 months? Whats ur take on flying a Mix family could that be the problem? you may or may not answer that one thanks LOL!!

Lamont, If you get your birds back, go out an get a bag of 14% mix and start out with a spoon full per bird and adjust it up or down to how you wish the birds to react and fly. In this case you are still letting them develop properly and your nor ruining them. If that doesn't do it add 3 coffee cans of unhulled barley to a bag of grain. You really need to stop trying to find the magic bullet in grains and raise some happy, unstarved acting, healthy birds. Just keep an eye on the amount you feed them. Be patient, it will work! Otis

With that kind of feed at young age, it will teach them to sky out and become an undesirable habit. You will be crying down the road of overflys.

Otis I agree with you all the way..I feed mine a mix and adjust to get the flying time I want.and when i see its time to put weight on them i rest for a week and feed up ..muscles they will always have since they are exercise and rested right all the time .but the weight they will lose and the body start to use up the muscle as reserve and trouble can start..I might use the wheat as to make them fly higher if they are too low and throw in a couple with the mix.if the mix is right as not to add more mix which in terns will give extra nutrients that they don't need.so i put in a couple of wheat if i want them to fly higher or milo if i want them lower.but my young birds will always be on a 14 to 16% protein mix I want them developing all their muscles right from the start.which they will need for growing and repairing muscles. and for later on in life..--------- Ralph

---------- Red if i had a choice i would take them off a few weeks after they start rolling some family start at 3 month some at 6 or 9 but i will never completely take them off I would give it to them three times a week.why i say if i had a choice is because here they don't have wheat or milo.so they get the mix all year but the family i have fly well on a mix.but I think i would get more frequency if i had the wheat or milo.because i did order it a couple of times from out there .but one family did well on it and the other didn't.so you have to know your family and how they react to the different environment from where they came from. I don't fly comp neither not because i don't want to but no one is into it here..racing homers is the thing here.. I have been around pigeons all my life too and still learning they teach me every time ,its more a therapy for me.I have to be around them. kept me out of trouble and the peace that it brings to my soul. its nothing like it..its being close to nature the outside the birds in the sky.a spot under the sun for free .and the friends that it brings like minded people like you........ you can't beat that.. If I said that was a good mix for YBs I'm sorry I meant for mature birds(at least 6 months and in the roll) on a fly schedule.I wouldn't take the good rich mix from a bird till at least 6 months. As far as flying a mix family,do you mean more than one family of birds in a kit??If so,hah!Funny you should ask.Been Flying my Neibel birds with up to six others in the kit with some Barrett blood in them. These part Barrett birds have almost all had issues such as to much roll, early landers, outbirds and bumpers.Almost all of these ones are deep rollers but have been a thorn in the side of the rest of the kit of Neibels.I decided at lockdown time (3 days ago)to seperate the part Barrett birds from the Neibels and fly them seperate next year.Anyways,to make a long story short,no I wouldn't attempt to fly 2 families of rollers together ever again. Hope this helps. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

I fly squeakers on a mix, (same as breeders) until they kit well and are flying a good time (30-40 min), This usually takes about 3-4 weeks of air time. Then they go on the fly ration same as other kit birds which for me is 60% wheat 40% milo. I watch them closely and add or reduce amount depending on fly time and body condition. If they lose weight or shorten fly time significantly Ill add a bit more feed. I begin with a tuna can for 10 birds and adjust up or down in volume depending on the birds condition and fly behavior. I have never lost a team in 7 yrs to flying too high (knock on wood) and usually have the opposite trouble, trying to get birds to lift and fly a decent time.
