With the Fall season upon us and Winter coming on, I thought a few of our loft management items might need to be modified in response.
Below are a few things that come to mind; some of the more experienced fanciers have dealt with these before and can offer up valuable insight for some of the new and not so new hobbyists amongst us.
How will you alter the Fall management of your birds in the following areas:
* Flying holdover old birds / young birds * Feed rations for breeders / kit birds * The breeding of pairs * Dealing w/ BOP * Health
What other thoughts or experiences might you be able to share that would be of use to the less experienced? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Good one Tony, And thanx for the great DVD,, keep me posted on more ... I am really instersted in the W.H.P 8mm movies converted into DVD format.. Any ways for me things are slownig down.. It is getting cold and I am seeing signs of the "B.ad O.nes P.laying". I will be breaking my 6 pairs up after this round. I am Flying the wire as far as my kits are conserned 20 flying hens and 12 flying cocks with acouple in reserve. I will basically keep the kit birds on the same program as far as feeding is conserned, with a build up tear down program and cut flying down to every 5th day or so till the fall fly. I am really excited about the possibility of having our own region,, I see a light at the end of the tunnel and it dosent feel like a train LOL.. It is amazing the support this sport has in reguards to people helping out with the many obsticles withen. Other than that looking foward to Crossing my two families on a 3year plan,, I have done alot of research and I am basically doing the same thing that many sucessful roller guy's have done.. Crossing two really close families.. I was fortunate to have the crosses in my own loft...However the Ruby's Will always be a option LOL... thanx for your time...

Tony,
* Fall / Winter Flying…. Don’t do it!!! I like to lock up the old bird team in early September. The BOP just get too bad after that. I usually have (1) kit of young birds that I am still trying to get to a point where they will be of some use after lock down.
* Feed I do not have extreme cold weather here so I just use a mixed no corn feed that is mixed 50/50 with wheat. Try not to get them fat, it just makes it harder to get them in shape come Spring.
* The breeding of pairs I have heard of a place that can do it with a feather. I will look it up when I get home.
* Dealing w/ BOP Don't! Just lock them down.
* Health I feed mixed grain with grit 1 per week. ACV in the water a couple of times a week. I do not medicate unless there are sick birds, or if I am bringing in new birds, then I will run them through 4 in 1 in a Quarantine pen.

I dont lock down so I dont change my feed. It rarely gets below 20 degrees here and then only at night. I start breeding in December and put my pairs together November 1. I do cut the feed to the breeders while they are resting and in moult. I ration thier feed instead of free choice. I dont medicate sick birds I eradicate and have had much healthier birds since taking that approach. Every thing gets wormed while there are no squeaks in the nest and I Vaccinate for PMV in October. I wouldnt do that except that I send out birds to people sometimes and trade birds with people. I imported it one time and wont chance that again. Bad stuff.
