Thought some of you might like to know that a cardboard box full of banded roller pigeons were left to die on the side of the road. They were thrown out with all the trash that is dumped there on a quiet road. The location was Poplar Hill Road in Pelham NH That location borders Dracut MA, Methuen MA and Salem NH. The police called me because we are known here in town as the "pigeon" people. We have racers and rollers and they always call us if they find banded birds. I have to say that it made me sick when I arrived at the scene. There was 22 birds, 2 were dead and the rest are complete skin and bones. I have no idea how long ago they were dumped. It was pouring rain out so we were able to catch them. Most were too weak to run anyway. Even in their condition, they are nice looking birds. Various colors-solid black, black white flight, grizzel, reds, etc. I guess they were unwanted by their owner but I just can't see leaving them for a slow death in a box. Why would someone do that? I have them here at my loft in a pen I have for sick or found birds. Not the ideal setup for 20 birds but it is better than where they were. 18 were banded, 2 not banded. Here are the band numbers:

Thanks for all of your help and support. No Andrew, the police said you have to have some kind of proof. All they have to say is that someone stole them from them. I did call and leave a voice mail with the 2 bands that have phone numbers. It is a NY area code so I doubt they drove from NY to NH to dump unwanted birds. They probably sold or gave them to someone here in NH or MA.

List,

I typed in the phone number into Yahoo search and came up with this:
Candace Wetherbee MCNINCH RD
DANSVILLE, NY 14437 585-335-8515

John Wetherbee MCNINCH RD
DANSVILLE, NY 14437 585-335-8515

Interestingly enough this guy's name is John - the same first name and phne number that is on the bands.

Looking at the map, it would not be too much of a stretch for a guy to load the pigeons in a box amongst other boxes of garbage and have them end up where you found them.

Ken

Whitewings, It's me the guy you and your husband brought the lost roller to a few months ago!

First off, I am disgusted to my core and will name the dirty, sick, bastard that did this at the end of this string.

I rode with this creep from Mass/NH to Upstate NY to pick up over 75 birds that belonged to a farmer in upstate that had recently passed away due to a farm accident(John Weathersbee). These birds were to be split between this jerk and myself....they are Dave Szabatura and Ron Kumro birds given to us directly from Dave. When we got back he only wanted to let me have one yearling kit and no breeders. I helped him settle, train and win our region with the holdovers that we picked up. He still wouldn't share the breeders with me as I refused to help him after that. He left our club and disappeared after that. I am disgusted and pissed! Lesson learned! It's ok to help a newbie, but take a long look at their character before you share birds with them! His name is (Moderated: RH) and he lives in (Moderated), NH.
Karen please call me, I will take them off your hands and see if I can revive some of them. They are parents, brothers and sisters to my birds! This sick jerk would do something like, this based on me stopping him from releasing birds he didn't want into the wild before! Dave will be here next weekend to Judge our region! Thanks and I'm sorry people like this exist. Otis

This disgusts me beyond belief.

As Mark Lewis reported above, a good friend of mine, John Wetherbee, died in a tragic farm truck accident. I was mentoring John for a couple years, as he wanted to work with my birds. After John's death, his wife asked me to come and pick up the birds and find a good home for them. These were all good quality birds out of my best pairs, and also birds that John had bred out of them. My good friend Mark Lewis had asked me for some birds earlier in the year because he wanted to switch over to my birds in his loft. This (Moderated RH) also wanted some of my birds, and he lived very close to Mark. I told Mark and Russ that if they drove out to meet me half way, I would bring these birds to them to SHARE. Since Mark is a good friend of mine, I wanted him to have a couple particular birds from the lot that were special to me. When the 3 of us met, I made clear to (Moderated: R) that these couple particular birds were for Mark, and the rest they could split up any way that they wish, as long as they shared the birds back and forth and worked the birds together. Mark tried working with this (Moderated: RH), but he started showing his true colors, and when I found out that the couple birds that I wanted Mark to have, were being kept at (Moderated: R) house, I called (Moderated: R) numerous times, described the birds and their bands, and he insisted that he did not have those particular birds. He then preceded to not allow Mark at his lofts. Then the surprise came when I showed up at (Moderated: R) house for one of their flys, when he did not know that I was coming. I noticed one of the birds in his loft that was suppose to go to Mark, that he swore he did not have. I then took (Moderated: R) aside, informed him that the bird that he claimed he did not have, was sitting there on his perch, and that I wanted him to give that bird back to Mark. He said that bird is going no where, so I told him that he either would give that bird back to Mark, or I would be through with him from this point on. I can not stand bold face liars. He told me he would not, so we all left his house, never to return.

Mark would remember better than I, but I think this happened about a year and a half ago, and none of us have heard from him since.

Those bands numbers listed above are all birds that were in (Moderated: R) possesion. I can think of no reason that these birds would be left in a card board box by the side of the road, unless (Moderated: R) put them there on purpose. (Moderated: R) had bred many babies off of those birds, but none of those birds were in the box, only birds that he received from Mark and I, from the late John Wetherbee.

This man (Moderated: R) purports to be a religious man, yet he would do something like this? Never would I have ever believed that anyone that raised pigeons, could ever do such a thing. I hope the authorities fine him, and throw the book at him. I am furious, and deeply saddened that these birds would be treated in this manner.

Hi Mark,

I am glad you responded! It's funny because yesterday when we got the birds we said they looked like yours but after I found out they were from NY I didn't make the connection.

I am going to call you in about an hour-I don't know how early is too early to call. I checked on the birds first thing this morning and they all seem fine and they ate all their food. You know me-I take good care of my birds so they are in good hands. The only thing I ask of you is to give us some babies next year. I hope that is not too much to ask. Afterall we do go out in the pouring rain in the woods filled with posion ivy to catch these birds! You know I take good care of my birds and they will have a good life with me! Talk to you soon!

Well I;m glad the rest of those birds are going to do well and that they will be kept in better loft with the proper care..
Sometimes we give birds away without wondering if they gonna be in good care we just assume they are.I mean like the proper loft condition fed good quality feed,
free from lice or mites ,worms.but never would you imagine your birds left out to starve to death on the side of the road in a box all 20 a full kit. NEVER!..especially Dave Sazb birds that I personally know how he keep these birds because i have his birds in my place.when I first received Dave's birds they were so clean free of lice healthy they look like gold I tell you..I had in the past received birds from three different birdman and they had lice, big flys on them.I was so disgusted I had to dip them in soap water and clorox to drown the bugs off them. but Dave's not even shit on their feet.So I know what you feeling Dave and remember what goes around comes on right back around ...

Hey All, I had to moderate this persons name. If what is posted above is true, how disappointing that a person would treat these creatures in such an unthinking and cruel way.

There are all sorts of people in this hobby and I, in running this site, I have had to deal with some pretty nasty and distasteful people on this board who are no longer here.

But I do have to say that 99.9% of the people here are good people and of good character.

Be careful and measure your words, there are people out there just looking for a fight with someone.

This is not my favorite thread... :-(

Tony, I understand your moderating this thread. This charcter was a backyarder that showed some interest and we suggested he join the nbrc. Paul, He is no longer a member and I agree with you-he shouldn't be. There are at least 6 lofts with 15 miles where the birds would have been willingly accepted. I'm within 5 miles, he could have put the box on my doorstep, but seems he had an ax to grind with everyone. Last point! There are local authorities that want to see justice done-we all do! Otis

Sal and All, I picked up the birds from Whitewing this a.m.
I wish to thank her, husband Don and Police for their rescue
work. A nice bald head red hen died just before I arrived. We surmised that because of the lack of poop in the box, that these birds were not being fed or watered in the loft where they resided before they were boxed and left on the side of the road by this animal. These breeders all trace back to Dave and my birds. Two were unrung. 16 are from 02 to 05 breeder stock. The strongest bird was a 96 cock with one bird banded by Dave himself. Their in good hands now, taking a well deserved bath! Otis

I wanted to let all of you know that I did speak with the animal officer here in depth about the entire incident. She has all the contact information and will be making an investigation. She will question him in depth and will look in his lofts to see what is going on with any birds there. Yes-it was a act of animal cruelty and it will be followed through. They will be contacting me to give me updates....do you want me to post them here or would you rather it be this end of this??? Just let me know.

Terrible thing to do!

Hard to believe that in 2008 animal cruelty of this nature is still occurring in the United States.

I want all to remember that this is no different then taking a box of birds out in the country and letting them go etc...our rollers do not know how to fend for themselves...SOME will get lucky and find a group of commies...but most will starve to death....so those of you who go out and let birds go...this is no different..if you have birds that you do not want or do not meet the standards...you either cull them.....or sell them for a dollar to somebody that will eat them.

I myself eat my culls.....they are good...if you can eat a chicken you can sure as hell eat a pigeon...they are far better...they taste just like a dove.

So...you pop there heads off....take a knife and place it at the bottom of the crop and just cut out the breast..bone and all....put them in a freezer bag...at the end of the season you will have a bag of breasts....put them on the BBQ with garlic salt and lemon pepper....or broil them..the taste good with mushrooms for some reason....or you can fry them like chicken...so....

I just had to say that...I have heard of people saying the go here or there and just let them go...that is no different....if you cant cull them find someone who will..

Paul's morbid post made me smile -- so logical.

I know this site is mostly all men -- in fact, haven't seen another woman post yet since I joined. . . . and I suspect some of you may not even like me being here . . . . and I'm cool with that. (Haven't disappeared yet, though, so I must be stubborn! lol) . . .

But this thread melts me because you guys all have such great hearts, kindness toward animals, living creatures.

What a great group of people you are!

(In spite of all of our political differences) lol

What happened to that guy in his lifetime to make him such a cruel and heartless person? I think I pity him.

Sorry...But i can no longer sit here idle and read some of the responses to this post. I have been reading on a daily bases the post on this site. Most of the information is excellent reading. However, fhtfire response to this is alarming. In a previous post he states that if this person that left these birds by the wayside is a member of the NBRC that this person should be banned for life. Yet, in his next post he states that there is no different from letting birds go in the wild, culling, sellig for a $1.00 or eating them. To me there is a BIG difference. At least if you let them go in wild they may find a person like Whitewings who would give them a chance. If you sell for a $1.00 at least you can by some grain. As far a eating, i don't know anyone North of the border that eats pigeons. From reading most of fhtfire post and seeing most of his photos, i find it hard to beleive that he has ever tasted a pigeon. I beleive Rudy Z may have eating his share LOL..
Now, who is to say that all these birds were culls? It is my understanding, from a good source close to the situation that one of the birds given to the late John Weathersbee was "Eagles" father. It does not appear to me that all 20 birds were culls.

SJP,

I never said it was not ok to cull or sell for 1 dollar...that is the right thing to do...not to suffer and starve....I said that LETTING THEM GO is no different 8 out of 10 rollers will die...the reason I know this...well...I have had two overflies and I have personal bands....I had phone calls from all over that they found my birds weeks later..but they were dead....on the side of the road...back yard...etc....I bet my ass it was starvation of lack of water....I got 1 bird back that trapped with a homer guy...and 2 birds back that were so weak from no grub that you could walk up and pick them up....when i put them in the loft the ate like there tails were on fire and drank water like there mouths were on fire....most of the birds were accounted for that had starved...none of them were hawk bait...the people who called said they were in full body and feather but just dead...so letting them go in the WILD is just that WILD..these are not WILD animals...they only know a water feeder and grain feeder...few will get lucky and follow commmies and find food and water....most will not...that is not humane...culling is humane....finding a home is humane....eating is humane....selling for food is humane...so....I never said that I was saying that the last mentioned were not humane.

So...inhumane..putting them in a box on the side of the road to starve....letting them go in the wild to starve (most).

Humane.....Culling...selling...giving to another flier.....eating....I did not lump this together.

I thought about all of you guys last night, and this is not about pigeons, but along the lines of discovering how many of you guys truly love animals.

Last night I was riding a horse I am training in the pasture and I kept seeing vehicles on the highway slowing down and honking, so I thought the neighbor's cattle were out on the highway again. I rode "Norma Jean" (a palomino named after Marilyn Monroe's real name because of her long blonde mane) through the gates and out onto the highway and what I saw was extremely sad . . .

Someone had hit a dog, and the dog's mate was standing guard over her body, right in the middle of the road. It was a dangerous situation because people were having to swerve to miss the dogs. I intended to tie my horse up and move the dog, but as I got closer, I realized that they were pit bulls, and the guard dog, which was wearing a full harness, was barking and threatening me not to get close. About this time, a big, burly young man pulled over, totally disgusted by someone hitting the dog and not stopping, and told me that the situation was breaking his heart, so he had turned around to come back and at least move the dead dog onto the side of the road so the other one wouldn't get killed.

Norma Jean and I kept the guard dog distracted while this good Samaritan did his job, and I'm not sure that he might not have been attacked if we hadn't been there to help.

As the guy drove off, he pounded his chest and said again how much that scene had hurt his heart.

I don't think I realized that there were so many kind-hearted animal-loving men out there!

I wonder if he owns roller pigeons? (smile)

It is eating but very thin. At least to my standards LOL but I tend over feed all my pigeons, or so I am told. My rollers look like little Modena's :-) I don't fly them-too many hawks. They are all fat and happy.
