In August I imported some Flying Oriental Rollers from California to British Columbia,Canada. For those of you interested, here is how it works. First, the person sending the birds must vaccinate them against paromyxovirus(sp?)and record the lot # of the vaccine used, the date it is given, and the band #s of the birds vaccinated. The birds must be vaccinated at least 30 days and not more than 6 months before export.Next,a veterinarian must come and inspect the birds and the home loft and fill out the appropriate USDA form, forwarding the forms to the USDA vet for the certified stamp. All band #s of the birds to be shipped must be recorded on these forms correctly.Once you have these papers back from the USDA vet and the 30 days since vaccination has elapsed, the birds can be shipped along with all the papers. They cannot be shipped across the border directly,so have the shipper send them to the U.S. Post Office nearest the border crossing close to your residence in Canada and pick the birds up there. You must make sure there is a Canadian CFIA vet on duty at the border post to inspect the birds on arrival.Once the papers have been approved by the Canadian vet you're gone clear to enter the country with your new birds.Cost--Vaccination,bird and loft inspection, shipping box and postage,USDA certification of papers was $155 for 6 birds.Vet at the Canadian border crossing--$50.Tell the Canuck vet the birds are being imported for breeding purposes. If you say show purposes, they must be quarentined 30 days so don't say they are for show.
