what do you prefer,me personally like the open loft because it is less work, more ventilation for the breeders, more liberty for them to exercise, less stress for them to breed.the way i do it is i lock them up in their own box until they all lay which it in about 10 to 15 days then i'll let them out and observe that they all do what i want them to do.then i would leave it open over night come back in the morning and see what is going on, if one pair tries to go in some elses box then i would lock that pair up a while longer. birds are really smart and they cooporate the way you want them to if you show them to.i do what benefitts my birds and me.its alot easier to put one feeder tray and one water giver instead of 12 individual trays and water givers.

All of my fosters are in open loft. I basically do the same as you.. After they have laid on the eggs for a while I open the compartments..

I like one more door, perches and nest boxes on completing my new set of 6 boxes. Not much time with my son's football games and preparing for the fly this Sunday, but should be finished by mid Oct. I will start on another set of 4 right after that. Both sets will be able to open up into the lofts after the eggs are laid.
I plan on breeding individuals from now on. No more wondering if theres hanky panky going on when my back is turned! ---------- Val

nice pics but i still think open is better because the squabs mature faster.what i mean by that is,the squabs fly down to the floor, they see what one bird does, that one bird starts pecking on the tray, the others see and start trying it and the sooner they start eating the better.i have 6 individuals right now and i just dont like it.i read that alot of people say its the best way to know who the daddy is but if the pairs know each other long enough nothing will happen.i know this because it has been proven,i have seen it with my own eyes.thank you all for your opinions.pisto

Maybe the solution is to breed both open and individual. I believe that birds in the open loft are happier and that the young mature quicker. I understand the idea behind individual pens and agree it's the only way to be sure what's what but my experience has been that older pairs are less likely to screw around than younger pairs.

I do both but prefer the open loft. The individuals come in handy when it comes time to swich up the pairs. I do get way more babies from the ones in the open loft. After all I do work with just one family of birds.

Individuals is the way to go. I breed both ways. Really tight bred Orientals I breed in open lofts. All my Birms are bred in individuals. That way I know when I have a kit of siblings they are really siblings.

I believe individual is the way to be certain your youngsters are from that pair. ..no if or buts... sometime someone will says that he breeds in open loft and it doesn't matter if he does because all of their breeding cocks are outstanding and it doesn't matter if mismating occurs because they are all from the same strain..that to me is the downhill slide to mediocrity not all your pairs are click pairs so you got to keep up with the progress in paying attention to who or what is breeding what and every year finding that great pair to replace the old one.... moving on up and not down .always taking a step forward not backwards is the name of the game.. ---------- Ralph

My breeding loft is set up individlule ( 22x30" @ 18"ht)myself I like them opened up after the where they get plenty of excersize, sun and baths. When set up proper cross topping is kept to a min., and honestly I don't loose any sleep over it at all as I could really care less, although at one time I thought that it actualy mean't something, any more the health of my breeders and enjoying is far more important to me, my birds are all the same gene pool anyway. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott
