Coopers i think might settle for one but peregrines will come for seconds and maybe even thirds before your birds come down.

RXR,

I don't know for sure but I think a cooper will come back for seconds. Yesterday I had a hen cooper take a young bird out of the air and fly off, about 20 minutes later returned and took one off the top of the kitbox about 2ft. above my head. It may not have been the same one but it came from the same direction the other one went!

I have seen the female peregrine take a bird from the male, and have the male come back for a second. I have seen one of the babies take a bird away from the female, and have her come back for a second. So far I have not had them joy killing at my place.

Coopers normally only take one bird.
But it is common for the Coopers to take 2 birds.
The male & female will hunt together and even attack the rollers from different directions.
If they are feeding they will even take up to 3 birds. I have lost 3 to the Coopers in one day.

Cooper snatches one so fast the guy was looking in the wrong direction,,, as soon a he noticed the cooper with roller in cluch... BAM another swopped down and retrived the hunt of the first,,, to put it short I lost 1 to the cooper and 8 due to the terror.... hey booker,

why was FWS in your backyard to start with? I mean what reason did they have to be there?

I was at a friends and the cooper came got a homer that just jumped off the roof and couldn't gain much speed. And then it disappeared in the forest; then 10 minutes later it came and got another one. It must have been feeding some children some how.

Well guys I have to admit I did fly hawks for a while in the late 80's early 90's. I can tell you that during breeding season Peregrine males will use prey to court their mates be they new or old. The male will come to your area, take a bird and fly back to present it to her. If she does not respond shortly by accepting and eating the catch, he will return as often as he has to. Many make the mistake and assume that a pair is hunting when another falcon appears but many times it's the same bird. This of course is during breeding season.

Coopers hawks (Accipiters) tend to be opportunists and although are very bold at times, prefer to go unseen. The reason we see them so much is because our birds are so accessible to them that the normal amount of hiding is not neccessary. A female strong and in a bad mood will return for seconds usually for young or because the killing is relatively easy for her. Most times they will watch your habits and hunt another day or time. The Cooper's cousin the Goshawk is even more secretive but smarter and crazier!! Thank God you dont have to deal with them!!

See you in the roll!

kcfirl, all I can say is to many friends too close... Some folks get into a pinch and they are offerd the option to "Burn a Hostage" and that hostage was me. I know this because they offerd me the same deal...LOL however it's not in my nature to do anything like that.. where I came from snitches got stiches,, and I learnd to stay outta matters that didnt consern me.. However everyone isnt like that..Basically they were there to conduct a investagation and follow leads... it was amazing all the info and pictures they had,,,crazy.. However I did nothing wrong,,I had a idea and not a new one , However it was modifyed and the proof was in the photos...I am clear and have a heafty fine that was reduced based on a Great Lawyer..Like I said too many friends too close... Thats why they were in my back yard... I will also like to add I didnt do anything wrong and am a hardworking productive, positive member in this hobbie/sport.. gimme a call some time and I will fill you in specific....as some things go unspoken...

Oh, oh, oh, I thought I was going to be lucky . . . I'm a newbie at this, but yesterday, got hit by a Cooper. It's not illegal to yell and run after them, is it? :(

Hey, Gabe -- I was only kidding.

But I am wondering . . . why does it always seem that they take your best rollers, and not the tree dwellers or other culls? Seems that way, anyway.

I look it up laura .says if you run after BOP $100 dollar fine
If you yell at them $500 fine.. they are very sensitive.you cannot run or yell only walk and speak in a low tone and polite Please leave my birds alone so like a Mike Tyson tone of voice.P)...seriously i notice that they always go after the best rollers they probably think they are the weakest because they looking like they hurt when rolling .or they must know that those are the good one to catch. beats me I just know they don't want my culls...:) ----------
