How can I boost my birds' immune systems a bit for the show coming up? I am really worried I may bring something back from there in them..? Just in case!
---------- Thanks, Andrew

Hey Andrew,
1: Minimize stress to, at and from the show (the birds, not you). 2: Do not share drinkers with other birds (again, the birds, not you). 3: Flood their digestive system with probiotics before and after the show. 4: Monitor for changing droppings after the show. 5: Consider giving a broad spectrum antibiotic if changes 6: Change your shoes after the show before entering your own loft.
Good luck! ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

A old timer once told me that the birds I take to show, to leave them there. In other words u never know what u may bring home from the show. ---------- BIG WILLY TOPP FLIGHT/NCRC

Kopesta when taking them to a show keep them in a dark area while being transported its very important other wise the light and stress will get to them majorly give them eloctrolights before during and after the show limit food consumption so as to make it to where they will have food to nurish there bodies but not enough for them to get stressed and regurgitate it all up and so when they are up on the show table they look good and the chest and crop is not to full give them all they can drink fluids so as they will not dehydrate when transporting i mix mite dust in the shavings to from and at the show to make sure no bugs get onto the birds check wings stance and how the birds feet look if they are healthy nothing sticks to the birds feet check the mouth for dryness if its to dry hydrate the bird with a syrange with out the needle open beak and put a few drops in at a time dont just put all in at once it can cause the bird to gag and regurgatate bile making the birds throat enflamed and making it not want to eat or drink while at the show or during transportation once at the show make sure your bird does not show signs of stress which are hunched in a corner or laying there the whole time if they rest its ok but excessive rest is some thing to worrie about bring a nice bottle of distilled water to make sure they are getting pure and non contaminated water the more fresh the water the better i usally bring my own food to a show so i know what they are eating dont let others feed or water your birds cause thats when they get sick cause of some one elses fault after the show quarintine your birds that where brought to the show for at least 2 weeks i usally quarntine for a month after that you should be good

Good info! I'm glad this post came up. I'm going to take some parlors to compete in December to a big pigeon show. I was going to take a couple BRs also to show. I see I have some planning to do. ---------- Val

Actually distilled water isn't good for this purpose (at a show) because it is void of any elements that actually act as a disinfectant. City water usually contains chlorine depending on where you are at, which has a mild disinfecting property. If this is a one day show, not too much to worry about. The trip will usually be more stressful than the show itself. Two and three day shows are more stressful for the birds. Pigeon shows of these lengths are where things can and do happen. Building up the immune system doesn't start a week before you plan to go. It starts many weeks before. The best immune system will be developed in a non-sterile loft where the birds are kept healthy, but allowed to naturally encounter various bacterias that they can develop an immunity to a variety of things. Worm them, treat them for unnoticeable respiratory infections and hammer them with probiotics and vitamins afterwards and they will ramp up a strong immune system. A little ACV and some garlic in the water helps too. Being a show fancier with many show breeds and traveling to different states for shows I do take my own feed and some probios/vitamin combo powder that I mix up and give my birds in the show for the duration they are there. This helps them to handle the stress better. Stress causes more sickness problems than anything else. Minimize the stress and you can minimize the potential for any run of the mill ailments your birds may come across. There is no prevention for viral exposure other than vaccinations for PMV which is always a good idea to do if you plan on showing pigeons.

Thanks for the post! Does it help that my birds are some the calmest pigeons around.. :D when the judge reaches in the show cage they just usually sit there and don't mind at all. They are so used to humans, that they don't care at all. Judges always comment on how calm they are..
