I obviously know what it looks like because I have a whole tonne of them but where has this originated from in the Birmingham roller? How long has it been around for? What color is it, dilute red? How do people breed for it if they don't have any? Is it some kind of almond tone?
---------- Thanks, Andrew

Andrew Yellow is a dilute variation of red. Yellow or Cream Bar is a dilute Red Bar, Yellow Check a dilute Red Check and Yellow Self is a dilute Recessive Red. Recessive Red is adifferent gene than Red Bar and Red Check but the dilutes of both are yellow. Almond is a seperate gene. I am not sure when or where it started in the rollers.

They can sure have colours hidden in their genes you wouldn't think.I have a pair of Orientals, the cock is black and the hen a dark dun and the first round of young I got off them were both yellows. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

great looking bird George. I paired up a light almond cock to a dark rec red self hen. I got one yellow self, one yellow w/f mixed tail, one yellow w/f mixed tail beard, the rest were almonds. I raised six out of that pair. Just fooling around having fun with them. Turns out so far 4 of the 6 are rolling pretty nice. Jim Bowen Kansas

Jim, that one yellow you had was an absolute blurrrr! I would guess it was rolling 40'straight down and tight. I would say 40' would be a very conservative number also. Great bird! I will never forget seeing your kits fly! Norm had some nice birds also! Please tell your wives Thanks for the food and hospitality! ---------- Val

Fresno Because yellow is recessive to red and cock birds can carrie it and not show it any cock bird out if yellows, dunns or silvers could carrie the ressive dilute gene there are lots of combinations that can produce it you need a red gene and a dilute gene to produce yellows.

I have not tried to breed anything for color. I am just trying to learn enough about color genitics to know what I have in my loft when it shows up and where it came from. As far as color description it seems so many people have different names for the same colors for example when I say silver I am refering to the dilute blue bar that actually looks like a dun bar. To me Dun bar makes more since but most pigeon breeds and most pigeon genetic books refer to them as Silvers yet if they are checked or solid they are refered to as Dunns. If I have a faverite color it would probabley be the self blacks to look at in the loft or black or red baldheads to watch fly. Right now I have several colors in my loft because I take them as they come until I get the roll that I want.

Fresno If you want to add color to your loft you should be able to find quality rollers in several colors just make sure that you are getting good quality rollers and not just pretty colored birds.
