Hey guys, let me get some input on this subject. I lost a super small cock bird that produced on 2 different hens. I never flew this cock, so don't know how he would have done in the air,and he died on me before I figured out he was throwing the goods. But 4 put of 6 of his young are doing 10 to 15 ft, nice style and pretty darn fast. I want to take two nest mates, both cock birds, and line breed them back to their mother and then later put them on their future daughters. My question is this? These birds are already pretty small and I don't expect them to get any bigger than their father. Will breeding them like this make the youngin's even smaller? If yes, is there such as a thing as too small ? Guys, I know this is a silly question, but would like your advice.

If you start breeding them back to there mother you will get more of the genes from the mother than from the father. I would breed the 1/2 brothers together and breed the offsprping to the uncles and aunts that are off from the original cock this way you are closer to the one that die. You will get some small birds and some bigger birds so Just breed the ones that you like.

If you can mate two 1/2 brothers together ...
that would be an accomplishment :)

Quickspin,
Your right, line breeding will only give me more of the hens genes, don't know what I was thinking. I don't have any other birds with this cocks blood line, so inbreeding his babies together is really my only option. Thanks Bud

Dale,

Are you breeding for rollers that are small or are you breeding for rollers that spin?

Personally I would be more concerned that the nestmates passed on genes to produce more fast spin.

Pico, you are too funny.

I was wondering also, when I noticed that a couple of the black and whites that I have are smaller than the rest of the kit. Does size make a big difference, generally?

Hey Sal,
your aweful busy this morning....Trying to get to that 2000 post today?..LOL

As far as the size, as long as they perform to "your" standards, then size isnt a factor.
