With all the talk here lately about feeds,I'm curious how many folks use a cafeteria feeder for their breeders?I've been using them in my breeder lofts since the summer of 07 and have sure found it cuts down on waste and saves alot of work. With 6 compartments,I put in wheat, milo, peas, safflower, popcorn and pigeon pellets.Peas, safflower and milo is what they eat the most of.---------- Kel. Kel, Good question. A few years ago I went to no-waste feeders for my breeders and youngsters in with the breeders. They are wood rectangle shaped, with a flat wood removable top, with clear Lexan or PVC sides with a row of 2" round holes in each side. It has cut down spillage dramatically because they must stick their heads inside to eat. I feed my kit birds in the open trough type of metal feeders sold at this site store. The sides are too high for spillage and the rollbar on top keeps them out of the feed. I am pleased with both compared with all previous methods tried.

In my open loft, I take a 5 gal. bucket with a lid and use a 2" hole saw to drill holes about 4" from the bottom. The birds have to stick their heads in the bucket to eat so the waste is minimal. You can put in enough feed to last several days or enough to make sure breeders always have feed for their young. With a little imagination I'm sure you could make some dividers to put in the botoom of the bucket.

Kel...with the cost of feed rising all the time that's the best way to feed the breeders. I've always used that type feeder for as long as I have had birds... ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

I dont know if this is what you call a cafeteria feeder, but works, But It took 20 mins to make, and from using it before I never had any waste, Theres a lot of feed that you can place in here, 2" depth and 24" long x 6" wide

Here is the Cafeteria Feeder I built missing the corn and pellets.I don't feed the pellets when they are not breeding and it's not cold enough to worry about feeding corn yet tho I do give them corn when they are breeding.
Ya gotta clean the feathers and cobwebs out once in awhile but no shit gets in there.

Tony's is really good looking -- I wonder how long the feed lasts in it?
Kel, I never thought of offering different feed like that -- have you noticed which they prefer the most and which they like the least?

Game, Seeds don't go bad in this feeder,as long as it is dry and no bugs in my lofts. Laura, Given a choice, pellets and corn and wheat is what they eat the least of,in that order.Safflower and peas are their favorites. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

I've been feeding mine straight laying pellets, but I sure like your idea. However, when I buy wheat, milo or peas, I have to buy a whole 50 lbs. sack -- I don't think I can feed that up before bugs get it. Are you all able to buy in smaller quantities? Does anyone buy their feed online?

Laura, Like Jerry said, store bulk feed in Rubbermaid containers that will hold 50lbs and it will keep well.I don't think buying feed online would be a good idea as the shipping costs would be through the roof!I've bought safflower in 1 gallon jugs before when I couldn't get it in the 50lb sacks and it was real expensive like $9.00 a jug.Not the way to go. Rudy-RXR, That is a good design but don't you find they tend to leave the wheat behind till last? ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

I thought the weevils could get into anything, but I'll give the Rubbermaid a try. Thanks!
Nice set up, RXR!
My flying kit is devouring the wheat, because right now, that's all they're getting.
I'm hoping that because they're waiting so long to fly, they will be great rollers. I've heard that the ones who roll early sometimes roll too deep (like all the way to the ground). Oh, that's a heartbreak.
