This cock rocks all day long on his nest. I intended to get a video today to ask advice, but I will have to try again tomorrow. At first, I thought he was positioning the eggs underneath him, but he doesn't stop the rocking. Anyone else have this happen? I don't think he's lacking anything -- here is a picture of him:
Laura, I`m not into the colors and such. I think its an almond. And thats a Bad A&& Lookin bird. I really like the look. WOW ! ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts
jnyce...after you answer a tread, check the post to see if your answer posted. READ thread thourghly so you understand it. No need to post the same answer 6 times. Or are you trying to be funny.
And I forgot to ask -- is it typical for one baby to be huge and the other tiny? The picture is fuzzy, but the baby on the right is almost half the size of the one on the left.
Laura, Ya i have seen it before, One nest mate is always stronger then the other, and eats a lot more, Or maybe its just a small hen. ---------- Tony. Calgary, AB
Laura Excellent Looking birds! Just make sure that both are full a couple times a day. If the one is very empty, then take the bigger one out for 20 minutes.. Also I can't wait to these those babies of that rocking cock.. Interesting! thanks for posting them!
Hey Laura, The eggs are laid usually a day apart, and with pigeons growing so fast, that 1 day difference can make a huge size difference between the babies. they will usually equal out within a few days as they eat and become stronger..Good luck with those, and that almond cock looks great.
Thanks to you all for the advice. I bet that's exactly why the one is bigger than the other -- it has fuzz on it and the smaller one is nekkid. Bet tomorrow morning it will have fuzz, too. Maybe he was rocking because one of them was hatching?
Oh wow! Laura Rockin babys and with a feather on its butt..lol..kool,,, I think that roller was rockin because it had Georgia on his mind..lol..it got me rockin here now..oh I almost forgot those birds flying look good ..good luck with them.. ---------- Ralph

Some babies are born without fuzz. Like yellow and Almond. Could be you will have one Normal colored squeaker and one Almond. I believe Almonds are born naked
Laura, the hen looks to be Almond also.Usually not a good idea to breed almond x almond. Can result in youngsters with bladder eye. ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Looks like theres some good potential in the kit. Lots of action in a young kit is a good sign for me. You should get some deeper birds with more air time under their wings. ---------- Butch @ Sundance Roller Lofts
Oh yea laura thats what they call me Bad to the bone when I'm wearing Kopetsa cologne.... The birds can't keep off me but the ladies sure do they can't stand the smell of bird poo poo on my shirt..I'm Bad to the Bone..babababa Bad to the Bone.:). ---------- Ralph

The small baby looks like a homozygous almond; lack of down is indicative of almond, the eyes look bulbous, i.e. bladder eye, and the poor growth rate also indicates homozygous almond. A pair of heterozygous almonds will breed 25% non-almond, 25% homozygous almond and 50% heterozygous almond. The merle gene has a similar mode of inheritance; two merles will breed 25% non-merle, 50% heterozygous merle and 25% homozygous merle. The latter being generally white, deaf and or blind and with other physical problems.
I was going to say the same thing Robert just said. You have a 25% chance of getting babies with genetic faults. 50% chance of getting carriers and 25% chance that they will be pure for the Almond gene and not have the genetic defects. I was just recentley reading about this because I just got and Almond this past weekend and I was told not to pair her with the Almond cock I was looking at because they would throw babies with birth defects. You do have some nice looking Almonds though along with your other birds. They all look nice.
I'm thinking Huey and Ron -- you're hittin' the nail on the head. The smaller one (nekkid one) died this morning. I'm thinking I should split this pair.
Thanks, Mario, and I'm glad to hear your opinion, Butch. I sure am getting impatient waiting on these birds to roll!
Thanks, Ralph -- I don't get too upset when critters die -- I figure there's a reason that they weren't meant to make it. I cannot stand for them to suffer, though, so I'm glad when they pass on quickly.
