Bob Brown ,,Good to remember a legend..Die- in 1993,may he R.I.P....I will take my time and write some versus from his book for those new guys and girls who don't know Bob Brown and those who can't no longer find his book or afford it ..
----------Graham Dexter writes about Bob Brown.
"Bob was the undoubtedly the best competitor and most able roller man of this century.Over more than a half century Bob competed and won the majority of honors each year.Bob never lost his love of the birds even when his health began to fail him..The years before his death I met him after a roller meeting and he told me that this was the first year that he have not manage to win a major trophy. He said this with both disbelief and great disappointment.Looking at the great man I made the mistake of offering some comfort.I suggested that it had been a difficult year, that his health had held him back, and that perhaps he should just relax with his birds and glory in his magnificent successes of the past. His reply was typical of the great competitor."No fear".he said, It made me more determined than ever,Next year I'm going all out to win everything".
Bob will be remembered not only for his tenacity to win, But his grace in defeat.his will be the first hand forward to congratulate the winner, even when he been only narrowly beaten. His voice would often be heard encouraging the newcomer, offering advise and generally taking the trouble that others in their excitement would miss.Bob was a great ambassador for the hobby traveling to the USA ,Canada,South Africa and Southern Ireland to spread the word. He was always reminding the people in power that we must recruit the youngsters.,encourage them what ever we can,for in his words "There lies the future of the hobby"...

Maybe we can all learn something from this great Legend..So true are those last words huh!

I too have birds from Jay & have kept them pure. I have the Bob Brown picture hanging in my living room & everybody always asks if it is my grandfather. I also have a picture of Bob & Bill Barrett hanging as well. I have Bill's birds as well.
2 great men.
Jay has supplied many roller men with rollers, some have kept them pure lots have bred other blood into them. To each his own.
Jay is a great roller man & knows Bob Brown birds like no other I know.
Jay is the Bill Pensom of my time.

True Spin, you must be 1 of the guys John "Eugene" we all call him John was talking about the other night when I was talking to him. He is also a great roller man, if he didn't lose so many birds to the "BOP" he would be on the top, still he can put up a pretty good kit. All of us who keep the English stuff pure still use Bob's pedigrees. I do all the time. Most of my stuff goes back to Bob's black griizzle cock & Bill's white self hen. I keep Bob's & Bill's line pure' but have done some crossing, Knowing Bob & Bill did the same.

When Jay went to England he got so many pairs of birds. Bob told him how to breed them. So Jay put all the pairs together & instead of remembering all the different band numbers, each pair became the nest # they were in. so nest 13 was in nest box #13, nest 7 was in nest box #7.
John's nest 7 stuff goes back to a black spangle cock I raised for him. I use individual nest boxes & John had an old cock that would not breed anymore. He asked me to try him in a individual nest box, I got 1 cock & 3 hens off him. I gave John the cock & kept the 3 hens.
I have quite a bit of 7 nest as well, goes good with 13 nest.
Got a young cock from Jay everyone thought was a homer, this bird was big, real big. I stayed him & flew him, man this bird could spin & powerful flyer & thats what he wanted to do. He would not breed, wanted to be flying. I flew him for 4 years before he would take a hen. He was a 8 & 13 nest. 8 nest is a cousin to 7 nest. I have a pile of birds going back to 8 & 13.
Nest 1,2,3,8,10,13,16 all go back to Bob Brown's black grizzle cock, who was the 1972 singles champ in England.
I've had my birds from Jay since 93. Have picked up a couple since. John's birds have been kept pure as well & I will take birds from him. I too have kept them pure but believe everyone else around have crossed them with other stuff, except maybe Frank Lyons from Sutton.
John's Barretts go back to Luke Terkalis birds. He kept them pure Barrett's. Ross Vito has pure Barrett's as well. When Barrett was dying he wanted to see Abdul so he could give him some birds out of the stock pen. Abdul plucked there tail & primary's out, put them in socks & put them under his overcoat & boarded a plane home. These birds ended up at Ross's (true story), Ross has had to give up the birds, failing health, he's 86/87 & has given them to his nephew.
I live in a small town called Schomberg 1/2 hour north of Toronto, Hwy#9 & hwy#27. Have 2 coops, my stock pen 20 x 12 at my house, my fly coop at my mothers up the road 20 x 12. I keep about 100 rollers. Have maybe 20 prisoners & fly the rest. No BOP's at the fly coop, lost 1 hen last spring, early, 1st I've lost in 6 years. Tried to fly them at my house & lost 20 in 3 days. The 2 coops are a mile apart.

Jay does send magazines & Xmas cards back, I do know that, there is 1 gentleman he talks to on the phone. Jay is the most knowledgable guy I know when it comes to the English stuff, especially Bob Brown stuff.
Between Jay & Luke Terkalis (rip) & Ross Vito, Luke was & Ross are experts on Bill Barrett's birds. Also learned alot from Ron Kumero of Buffalo area USA & Joe Marlett USA.
George Mason was at my loft when I first started out flying in the World Fly, beleive it was 95 or 96.
I really like the Bob Brown stuff, it's a little larger than most birds.
Bill's are alot smaller in most cases, but through a larger bird once in a while, figure it's Bob's blood showing up.
The crosses between the 2 familys are some of my best birds.

Had the pleasure of being present in Bobs garden one Sunday evening, around 1980 when he flew what to me were the greatest working kit of old bird rollers I have ever seen,23 in total, and its fair to say they rolled non stop for approx 45 Min's,all with depth and most with good velocity, still recall that exhibition quite clearly in my minds eye,Bob along with his brother Jess was to pay many visits to us during the following years, often with Bill Barrett,John Lenihan, and on one occasion George Mason, being fond of a tipple his stays were always enjoyable, and his duets in his lovely singing voice with his brother Jess, always songs from "The Pirates of Penzance" were equally enjoyed by us,great roller men, great company, great times, and much laughter, like the occasion we brought himself Jess and Bill to a rural pub,who specialized in serving the Irish Delicacy of "Crubeens" boiled pigs feet and cabbage, always eaten from the hand,to watch those three trying to eat these with a knife and fork was absolutely hilarious, there were bones and bits of crubeens whizzing round like scud missiles,Bobs bottom lip ended up stuck to his moustache, tears of laughter falling down our faces, can vividly still see his face as we had brought him outside the pub to a rain barrel to wash his face, and his plummy English tones, arms akimbo,"Donny what have you f**king done to me,what have I eaten"great memories of very nice genuine people.
