For the newer roller breeders...... Once upon a time, there were "dual purpose" rollers which were supposed to be bred both for the show pen and the air. They had pedigrees going back to Birmingham's finest. They were winning at roller shows. They were not being flown and were even being "enhanced" by blood of other breeds. Finally the flying rollermen got tired of what was happening at the shows and kicked the show rollers to the curb... They became a seperate breed. Here are some pictures of champion Show rollers as they are today.

Paul - Great post. They were crossed heavily with modena's. I for the life of me cannot figure out why anyone would want to cross the precious Birmingham roller but this is just my opinion.

I find it sad to look at them, how are they supposed to roll, let alone spin? That is like entering a draft horse in the Kentucky Derby. I think it is sad to take a performing artist and breed it for anything less than performance. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

Guys
It's very difficult to breed quality rollers having good rollers to start with and what you call true Birmingham Rollers not just normal rollers that tumble 20 feet. I have gone to many houses and many have good rollers but many also have tumblers which they confuse with rollers. Or roll downs which they think are there best ones and they stock those and prize to the highest. When I was a young kid I started with color rollers and Tumblers, parlors but ones you see a true Birmingham Roller wow. Everything else seems nothing compare to it and the only thing on mine is breeding more of those special birds.
I like color rollers but birmingham colors that were already in the blood. I don't breed for color as it's hard as it's already. There are so many nice colors in rollers that you don't need to make new ones or introduce other breeds to make them different. Why fix something that it's not broken. There are Grizzles, Reds, Whites, Checks, Mottles, Lavenders, Blue and many more colors that are nice that roll to the highest quality.
A Pigeon that rolls is not what matters that is just one step. Many think that because it rolls 50-300 feet is a stock bird if it was that easy. We need a pigeon that is smart, is strong, has control, good body type, has hearth, good character, good speed, good style of roll, exit the roll correctly and enters the roll correctly. No wing change in between the start and finish of the roll and much more. Now what would happened if I put a Cream bar in a bird that has everything I like but is a blue check self and I don't like Blue checks self and I like Cream birds? I will start all over again fixing step by step and this doesn't take 1-3 years it takes a long time and knowing what to do now for the ones that don't even have a clue one what a true Birmingham Roller suppose to roll will never be able to get one.
I'm not pointing fingers at no one, I'm just disappointed with this that many put there hard time to make them roll to the highest standard and some want them to look pretty.
Look at the picture bellow that is how a roller is suppose to roll.

Gee.. they look so lazy. They should re-name them flippers because they would never roll like a true Birmingham Roller. ---------- Ronnie.

It is no different than what the show people have done to all the major bird dog breeds. When looking for or breeding English Springer Spaniels on must insert Field Breed in order to even get a dog that has hunting and retrieving instinct. The show breds have lost most of the field traits along with gaining other traits like Rage. I can remember when you took show rollers right out of the performance loft but no longer.
