The Women
A lot is often spoken about the men who raise and fly the Birmingham Roller. Those same men spoken about sometimes speak for themselves, but rarely about themselves. During my trip with the prelim. Judge for the Fall Fly throughout Region 5 of the NBRC it was noted in my observations the quiet, but strong support that was coming from the wives; the women. I remember getting ready to sit down to a cooked meal and heard a woman’s voice coming from behind me stating that the men are to set at the table. The ladies sat or stood throughout the remainder of the house to eat the meal they collectively worked to prepare for everyone and especially for the men. The tone was not in a subservient manner, but more of a matter of fact tone. Nothing more and nothing less; nobody being demeaned and nobody holding dominion over anyone else.
As the time went on it was noted that the club’s band fees and club dues was assigned to one of the women. It is what they did to support the club and help the men. They also planned the meals and prepared the meals for the monthly meetings and they had all developed a system of putting it all together smoothly and it was plentiful and delicious. All for the club; all for the men. The men would eat and confer about pigeons both past and present. They would also talk about and tell stories of pigeon men who have passed on. The memories where always fond memories even when I knew the person being talked about had some jagged edges. They would always pass this off with statements like “he had his ways” and thus minimizing his “sins“ and refraining from saying anything bad about the deceased. Even the living was protected in some of the same manner. If he was not there; nothing demeaning was said about him.
The women did not intrude in the tails and yarns that was being past from man to man; not because they couldn’t, but because they wouldn’t. It was noted also of the closeness the couples shared with each other. With their marriages being as long as 60 years. They were no longer couples; they truly have became one with each being a half. The are always referred to as Spike and Shirley; Barb and Lloyd; and so on. Rarely referred to by just a single name. It is always Nick and Linda by my friends and relatives and the same is held true with those of Region 5. They no longer know us by a single name and we have worked hard to earn that distinction as have the many others who I am referring.
This is about and in honor of Shirley Gilmore; Linda Higginbotham; Barbara Lee; Dixie Bowen; June Bussing; Guadalupe Ortiz; Lois Boettcher; Debbie Richardson; Laura Rusher; Monica Galarza; and the many more that have supported their men in this crazy hobby. And yes, I will include Linda Siders; the other half of Nick and Linda. There is no way that I can even begin to explain and show the full gratitude I have for the women. The respect I have for you for simply putting up with us men and our pigeons is beyond my capabilities to describe. I want to especially thank those women who opened up thier homes not only to feed us, but also to give us a comfortable place to stay for the night. There is one bachelor who feed us and gave us room to sleep the night; Cecil Canoy. A special thanks to you, Cecil.
Thank you, Ladies for being there through thick and thin. Thank you for feeding the birds and scraping the poop in our absents and even when we were present. Thank you for making us feel worthy of you.

You mean there are still Women around like that? Almost as hard as finding a good rolling kit
You some times couples like that need to be recognized Its nice that you have through this post.
When I was a kid one of the old timers told me this and I still remember it.
He said My wife does not mind me keeping pigeons.. we asked Why?
She says: a least I know where you are all the time ..in the back yard with the birds
I tell my wife that from time to time ..instead i could be in a bar, gambling or golfing every weekend she prefers the pigeons

My sister in law told my wife the same thing once. I think it was Val who also said once " Give your wife a kiss and a pat on the derriere before you go out in the backyard to play with your birds." Also wise words ---------- V99 Straight up,no chaser.

Nick, first and foremost God Bless you and your family. As the judge for the event the greatest gift anyone gave me was Spikes signaifcant other when she stated that Spike really liked and agreed with how I scored the birds. He agreed on the Quality and Depth etc. She stated that Spike was within three or four points of every kit I judged. The women were at each house with their husbands and not just talking but watching the birds fly and get attached by the BOP. I salute all the fliers, wifes, and families of Region 5. God Bless all you!!!! Carl R. Braker

This is the type of thread that gets the heart pumping.
I have known the guys and their wives mentioned above for several years, as they are my fellow club members, and as stated, the wives are just as wonderful, if not moreso, than the guys. I have been blessed to have been a part of this wonderful group of guys and gals and hope to continue to be a part of their lives for many years..It is people like these that bring joy to each and every meeting we have had..Salute to all of the wives out there that stick by their men.
Nice thread Nick.
