I purchased a pair of birds which have never been flown.

For the past two years they have produced 90% great spinners. This year i was luckey to have saved some youngsters from the BOP

How should I pair for next year?

Brother to sister.... or daughter to father and son to mother .

Please let me know which methood is perfered by experienced breeders.

you should try all ways till you find the perfect pair. cause what works for others may not work for you. be your own experience learn your self and listen to everthing that all roller men/women have to say but you will be your own judge cause there your birds

I would try half and half, father to daughter for half your breeding season, then break, switch to brother and sister for the remainder of the season and mate the orginals for the second half, same go's for the mother son in the first half.

Thanks Thom I will try that and see what happens. Thom do you usually do this and find that you get a better spin or the same. They usually produce blacks every one and a while they produce a Dun the duns never spin

Thom Thanks for the information I went through a tuff time over the past year ...have always enjoyed your pics and advice..Pr rollers has recommended a book i am going to get

You know Tom when I had the rollers in the seventies ... never took all these approaches just let the birds breed and they did great always ifeel they were better birds back then.

Mario no they are not Dans birds these are a pair of blacks i picked up from Helmet linkey in Kitchener ontario

Dans family is so close I am going to let them pair up the way they want

Mario are you in Ontario or quebec

----------Subject: Breeding
I believe that in-breeding occurs in any good loft where there is top quality rollers and top quality stock pigeons . In-breeding becomes a must if only by the amount of good youngsters that you breed from these stock pigeons. it's only a matter of time before you breed from an abundance of good rollers and if they're that good they are going to make your stock loft.it's therefore only a matter of time before related pairs are going together.but as sure as you must in-breed at a later date you have got to out cross. there should be no hurry to rush to inbreed. I mean how do you value a bird. For me you want to be talking about seven to eight years before you decide to put a daughter back to her father or a mother back to her son. The only reason to put a father back to his daughter is if the cock was consistent in the breeding pen over many years. Then the benefit is when you have already use some of his offspring in the stock pen because they have been that good in the air, and you get two bites of the cherry if several offspring daughters have bred good youngsters then you might have 4 or 5 hens of him that you can pick from .on the other hand, if you use them early say when he was 2 to 3 years old than that is rushing the job. For me you can't value its stock pigeon that early. I honestly believe that the bird should be getting on in age so you would have probably 4 or 5 times the amount of daughter of it to choose from. To many people have a good cock and the first good daughter they breed off it they want to put it straight back into stock. That for me is rushing things I'm quite happy to put a few pigeons down whether they are related or not. if they breed the good quality rollers that is all i want. Its only a hobby to me. Some people prefer half brother and half sister or first cousins which is a decent mating. Father and daughter is a decent mating but i have no real preference. If you are producing good rollers from them then that is a good pair.

Canspinners, I have raised rollers most of my life. I've had to stop and start over from time to time but had some good birds in the process.
I agree with most if not all that Ralph posted, I'm a big believer in breeding best to best regardless of color or relationship, in an already tight gene pool. The biggest difference would be time. I think that line breeding is the shortest means to an end. This coming breeding season will be my third season with the strain I'm concentrating on now (Ruby's). I was very fortunate in the birds I received from Tony, although I think the quality I received,is the quality he sends!
But to attempt to answer your question. My first year's breeding season produced more good cocks then hens. The cock's are faster, tighter, and more frequent then the hens but I'm not sure if this is just unique to my foundation pair. The hen's all are carbon copies of their mother, hard body, apple shaped, small rather then long in cast. From this origanal pairing, I produced one exceptional cock and several of almost equal value. This cock I paired back to it's mother with very good results. From this pairing I now have better hens, they look the same as the orginal hen and are confirmed in the air. I chose the best hen and breed her back to her father, with good results but not eaqual too the son to mother pairing. That was my second season. This year I plan on the best grandson back to the origanl hen and the best grandaughter back to the origanal cock, for three rounds (using fosters). Then, I will break and remate them as the orginal pairings for the remainder of my season. At the same time. I will pair the best to the best from my first years program. Brother to sister, for half of the season, then break and pair them to the best young hen and cock from the second years program.
This is my plan, as I'm attempting to maximise the blood from these two original birds in the shortest time possible. I'm certian this is not the only way, it is just the way I'm going about my program.
What ever you decide, line breeding or best to best, I wish you great success!
Thom
