O/K I got this bird and noticed that all the tail feathers were bent( from the cage it was in). After about two weeks, where it was bent they all fell off right there, so it has a damaged tail . His brother is is starting to perform with all the right stuff , they are about 6 months old and he is spinning about 8 to 10 feet then gets back in the kit . My question is do I pluck them, trim them, or what ? I free fly the young with no pressure(once a week) before pulling the ones that work hard, for my team , and with the broken tail and all he is acting like his nest mate. he only dose about 3 tight spins( lack of flying ) Can anyone help ? Thanks... STUDENT 2 THE GAME

Pluck the works, gently but firmly, one at a time and in 2 or 3 weeks they'll all be grown back it. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

I agree, don't get too hasty on plucking as it will damage what balance he currently has. One feather at a time and from opposite sides of the tail, right this week, left next and so on. Feathers quickly return as long as you're not really aggressive about it. You could take a couple at a time but never next to each other in my experience. ---------- Rule #1: Don't build your loft anywhere near your wife's clothesline....

I've always taken like the worst one from each side and waited like two to three days before plucking two more. You may find that some may fall out by themselves before you get to them. ---------- Rule #1: Don't build your loft anywhere near your wife's clothesline....

Thanks ... but it doesnt seem like they are going to fall out, and they all are in the same condition. So Im going to start plucking 1 on each side and wait a week than pluck the next two and so on.... Thanks again ... STUDENT 2 THE GAME

Don't like to go against ya there brudah, but that bird should be kept in till it has new feathers at least 1/2 way grown in,so why not pull them all at once?It won't hurt the bird.I've had birds shipped to me and(I wouldn't do this just for shipping birds)the guy who shipped 'em plucked all the tailfeathers of the shipment of 4 birds so there would be more room in the banana box he sent them in,and the tails looked great 2 weeks later. ---------- Kel. I guess my style is a little different. I do like to get 'em up and flying as soon as possible, They don't get to far with a bare tail! LOL! You're the master of your own birds so you do what you think is best. ---------- Rule #1: Don't build your loft anywhere near your wife's clothesline....
