I've always just done my own thing. I would like to try a competition someday but to me, money & prizes are just fluff. I try to focus on what traits I want to promote in my birds as opposed to what prizes would look good on my wall. I enjoy having the neighbor kids wanting to watch them fly. It's rewarding when you get to introduce someone else to this hobby, much more than money, even if your just a novice yourself. IMO, Money is the root of much (if not all) evil.
Once cash prizes are involved, some people will compete for the wrong reasons. It could start to get ugly.
The thrill of the competition should be enough reward, or else your heart probably isn't really in it. (or in my case, the thrill of the hope that maybe someday my birds will be good enough to compete, lol, and for now, the thrill of watching them spin from my own backyard)
I'm still a newbie, but wanted to share my thoughts on the subject.

People, Have asked me this alot when they here I roll pigeons.. "Howmuch do u win?" I do this thing because it was breed into me, I ve always been around Rollers, and Dogs. I look at it like this I want to have a strain of rollers that are up there with the best,, not nessarly the best but rubbing elbows withum Yakno. So for me its reconition., Withen my time I have done some things to get my family reconized, this was but not limited to, giving birds away to people that neededum our were interested in them. This never worked!!Ok well maby acouple of times. I think once you get the reconition then other things will follow, I mean just go to a big show you will see!!!! maby even someone you gave rollers to spend $150 on a single bird... LOL it happens. now is this bird better than yours? did the guy work harder than you, building his family? Or is it the reconition of that picticular breeder's fly record/acoplishments, reputation? So the way I see it, Reconition is the foundation, after that all will fall into place.

well said all of you's,,thanks for the post-it is true that some people would go out of there way to breed for the wrong reasons after all look what happened to michael vick and his pit bulls sad story. cock fighting too is bad i never did like that sort of thing. poor animals don't have a choice but to kill.as for the reputation thing that does go a long way. $$$$$ the root of all evil you said a mouth full. thanks all Tomas :)

There have been big money flys in the past. Most are futurities so you have to send squeakers. One of the best was "The California Classic",it paid $2000 to win it. $75/bird and you could enter(2)birds. It paid four places. I have also sent birds to futurities in Bosie Id.and to Orville Ca. I think they are fun and you have faith in your program and know which babies to send. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

I tried to have a Futurity " The Las Vegas Classic " but I was unable to get the support we needed to make the Fly Happen.
1st place was $2000 dollers and second was $1000 dollers and third $500 dollers and so on. to 20th place.
We only needed 50 entries at 150.00 for two Birds but we only got 20 entries.
I think most people are into show Pigeons now days.

We spend all this money on topp of the line birds, feed, supplies and we win nothing. Sometimes I ask myself why do I want to compete. Is it because I want to feel like I have the biggest whatever,,or is to feel like I have acomplished something challenging. Whatever the reason is winning some cash would deffinately be more motivating to me that is. Homer racers can win tons of cash. I wounder why the roller hobby never really adopted a cash prize for the first place winner. That would be cool huh?

George R are you going to try and have that fly again? Im not sure they filled up in the first "Classic" but they had it and when people found out Billing's won $2000 they filled up quick the next year.
Big Willy, I think the reason it different is that the racers are on a clock, fast time wins and the birds are judged and that is subjective,so you really have to have well respected judges. What ever it is,$$$,trophies,or pride we all want to win and we have to fly for the right reasons,by putting the best quality spinners up. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

I will not attempt to put together another fly. I believe it would be a waste of my time .
