I think most of us folks fairly new to the hobby enjoy reading about legends in this sport? Pensom, Jaconette, etc. I was curious if some of you guys could fill us in on who Bob Scott was. I figure if there are memorial flys/shows named after someone there must be a good reason. This is one of those people I just hadn't found much written about.

Hi Pumpkin man Bob Scott was one of many great roller breeders here in Souther California, He aquired birds from Pensom,Plona, and Lemyer. Bob was one of the top guys on individual fly comp in the 70s,he won the NBRC 1972 individal Champion with- SCRC-72#1570, He bred many good birds,Many of todays flyers have Bob Scott in there birds whether they know it or not. The reasson you havent heard much about him is ,Nowadays some of the top breeders around dont put the year or club letters on there pedegrees (wonder why),that way you dont know where they actualy come from. Bob Had 1220 for a while,he bred #44 that was a great producer,he had nbrc-71#855 the daughter of the Redheaded hen. Some other great breeders youl never hear much about are Doug Brown,Eldon Mcdowell,Jim Mc Cauley,Cornell Norwood,Fred Winbegler, and a few others i cant think of at the moment. Charly Saldana is one of the few that has kepet Bob's birds pure,he has nothing but the best of Bob Scott and no other family in his loft. Bob's Birds tend to be on the deep side, they are to my opinion the fastes spinners ever bred, the frequency was not a priorety in the 70s as much as quality and deph, thats why they are not flown for kit as much, ive done pretty good with them but it took years to figure the feed to peak them at the right time for comp. I hope this answers your question, you might not get much more of a responce as many people that knew him are older and dont tend to get on the web like the younger generation. Thanks Hector Coya

Some of the deepest spinners I have ever seen were over at Bot Scott's house. I went there with Cornell Norwood a couple of times. Bob said that he had a hard time keeping those deep spinners because of the pressures from so many of the Los Angeles breeders=$$$$ They were super deep and very fast too...especially considering the distance they were rolling. Nice post Hector! As a kid growing up in Watts L.A. Bob Scott was the name we heard most although none of us kids had ever seen or met him. It wasn't until about 1983 or so when I met him by wandering into his shop. I was told about his store by another pet store ownwer but did not know it was Bob Scott I was going to meet. I was honored, suprised, in awe and felt like I had just met a movie star, after all I had been hearing about him since I was 12 years old, and now at 23 I meet him! To make a long story short, for the next few years I must have purchased or been given nearly 100 birds from Bob. He even gave me a few from the kit in back of the store several times. His wife was wonderful as well and always addressed me as Costa Mesa because I lived there at the time. I laughed talked and ate bar b que right there at the shop on many occassions with them both and will always remember their kindness. I lost touch with them around "87".
I've met some guys and have seen posts on a few occassions here where people said they had these obscure types and colors of Bob's birds. I can only speak from my experience and as I remember I mostly picked up dark checks, some ashes and a few reccessives, badges here and there but mostly checks some white flights. If memory serves, he was banding SCRC back then, at least my birds were but it's been a long while and I was not into recording back in those days. The birds were smooth, unusually deep with nice speed. Very consistent back then! It's nice that Hector whom I've met and been to his home and others who also have the real stuff are keeping Bob's memory in a positive light within our hobby by flying his birds. It's been a while since I've seen Scott birds in the air. Would love to see them again! ---------- See you in the roll! Allen Strother (Big Al) "High Plains Spinner Loft"

Hi Ralph, Most of the birds were given to buddies of mine john Taylor and Billy ? who no longer raise birds. I gave him one I called "Lando" (Red Check) who became his foundation for a family that ran well into the 90's. John may have kept those records. I dont know. He had all Bob Scott birds from me. ---------- See you in the roll! Allen Strother (Big Al) "High Plains Spinner Loft"

I still breed some old Bob Scott 1220 family of birds, I use it for control in my hot birds. Having great success with it. Crossing it with A family of birds from Dewanye Holmes from So. Cal and getting some deep and fast muffs.

Thanks guys it's always interesting to hear about some of the legends in the hobby. It's amazing how the mystique that surrounds the hobby, the people, and the birds really draw you into it. It's strangely fascinating to most all of us except the people that have never experienced it. After having rollers for about 10 years now it's hard for me to imagine why anyone wouldn't want to keep rollers. I have had all kinds of livestock and pigeons but there really is nothing that compares to these birds.
