T-town, how old are you?

Guys, let this be a wake up call to you. Our society is changing rapidly from hunter/gatherer to social nieve. Our children today aren't growing up with the experience of how to hunt, fish or cultivate a food source. Most wouldn't know how to clean a fish or skin out a rabbit. I bet you there are only a handful here that know how to breast a dove or pigeon. They are growing up on electronic stimuli and know that food is either in the refrigerator or at the drive through. When asked the question...."what would you do when the lights go out?", most have absolutely no idea what that means or the ramifications of it. That in itself is the evidence that this generation will consume itself and be left wondering.

I absolutely agree. With the lack of a silver lining on the economic cloud, people may have to be creative or stand in a soup line. I guess the choice is up to everyone!

t-town, i was replying to your posts last night but opted to not to because you stated " I just happen to like Roller pigeons.. You guys can do what ever you want with yours." yet you you posts remarks like your lasts. You are naive t-town. like brian said, how old are you? Sounds like your the only "old lady" here with all your bickering. get a life? yes you should. You really contradict yourself, you also stated "hell do what you want" then why not let the comments be and you keep your comments to yourself. just because you dont agree with a topic doesnt mean you should bash on people. Be constructive if you may. I really dont see how those remarks given are so smart assed as you say.

Sir, you need to find a hobby and relax. Most of us aren't out to offend anyone, just simply joking around. If you can't calm down, take a minute from the computer, fly a kit and let it go. Sorry that you became so wound up, I hope you can take this post as an olive branch.

I agree with you !!! This thing just got carried away.
And I do have a bit of a temper. But something that started out so simpel just kept growing. I was stationed overseas and I watched those people eat any and everything.
And I guess some of those old momeries came back !! Those poor basturds would be happy to have a pigeon to eat !!

So I do agree with you. Enought said ??

Hey T-Town, I respect that you place such high regards to the consumption of your rollers! I do too! What I have a problem with is your thinking that you are doing the right thing by letting them go into the wild. You know what happens to a box of birds let go? First those smart and tough enough to avoid the hawks won't be many, so that's like closing your traps and not allowing your birds to enter in face of an onslaught. Secondly, your birds first need will be water and as they pass over lakes or ponds in pursuit of home, they only remember drinking and finding water in that vessel you last provided, thus unless it's raining dehydration reaches critical mass. Dying a slow death is a lot more painful that a quick exit.
Flocking up with commies could happen but they would have to compete against larger birds that know the rules and what to eat. I'm sure you know this, but my last point is I just recovered a box of birds that a heartless jerk left in the wild to die. It's been a struggle to put any weight back on them with the cold getting more prominent. Quickly culling your birds using humane methods is considerably better than allowing them to suffer just because you don't see them suffer! Otis

Hey Otis, I've been the local pigeon trapper for a long time. A lot of these "commies" as you call them have come to my place to roost until my neighbor has another bird dog or two to train. Yes, I agree, turning domestic birds out is nuts. In farming areas like my town, there is plenty of food but they become a mess in the barns, sawmills and other hiding places. The feral ones get used by bird dog trainers which gives the dog a great experience with real birds. I do cull out to the feral loft so that they can be dispatched by someone else.

I just had one more thing to say !!! I don't want youall thinking I'm some kind of weirdo ?? I have cull birds to and I usely give several of them away to kids I know .. I raised 230 Rollers this past year { 2008 }. So there are always birds to give away as well as selling. I sell a lot of birds each year.. I keep around 200 breeders. I wouldn't ever just turn them out. I live in BOP alley. I was just a little pissed the other day. This is a good site I am on here about everyday. A person can learn a lot on here. Everyone has there own feelings about differant things. Which is normal !! So I will leave it at that !!

Thank You for Listening.

ROFL at the reaction this post got! Scott's comment about yellow birds really cracks me up!

I'm voting with the country guys who make pigeon stew. Sorry -- might be "pets", but my survival instinct is alive and well. (In the movie "Cold Mountain", I would have had to play the part that Renee Zelwegger played.) Nothing wrong with an instant, quick, humane death and then harvesting what you kill.

I've never had pigeon, but I sure do love quail!

And I've raised calves on the bottle, turned them out to pasture for a few months, then slaughtered them and put them in the freezer. Better that they feed the family, than the family starve trying to feed them through the winter!

It's just no big deal.

I think when we give our cull birds away it add more cull birds to other people loft...I think the best ways to get rid of cull birds is to just put them in a pot, release them some where far, use them as BOPs bait, or use them as fosters...

I can agree with "use them as fosters" or give them to other people who just want some pets or want to use them as fosters.. Or who just like top show them.

Yep! Last Alligator Snapper I caught weighed 65lbs. A lot depends on how it is dressed and the water in which it was caught.

I know each persons taste is different and somewhat depends on what you were exposed to growing up.

I would speculate that few on this sight have ever experienced true hunger or had to watch loved ones go hungry. Some may have seen it in other places in the world, it is a disturbing sight.

I don't think anyone can say with any certainty what they would or would not do facing famine.

t-town-rollers,
i feel you man, when you see something that you raised with your hands for a long time, you can't see any harm happen to it.
if you guys are going to kill it, look into there eyes, maybe that will make you think before you kill it.

when i have to kill my unwanted homers, i make someone else do it, cause i cant bare to see anything happen to it.

Thank you !! Someone at least see's what I mean !!
If a man will raise a good line of birds and does it with some control of the amout of them.
Then there isn't that many to cull. Sure there is always a few but you can deal with that.

"God has a plan and place for all of His animals...right beside the potatoes and gravy"

I will have seen that as well and liked it.

Here is another T-shirt I have seen

P.E.T.A. People Eating Tasty Animals

I think everyone has the right to do what they want to do with their culls as long as it is humane, if they want to eat them that is fine if they want to give them away that is okay and if people want to keep everything they raise that is their choice as long as they pay the feed bill. I do not see why some have to be so critical of what other people do with their birds. If someone does not want to kill their own birds or eat them that is okay but they should try understand that others on this group grew up eating pigeon and to them their is nothing wrong with it. I have never eaten my own pigeons or any pigeons for that matter but that does not mean that I am going to tell other peopole that they are not true pigeon breeders if they do. I know lots of people who love breeding lots of different types of animals and many of them consider being able to consume what they raise as part of their love for their hobby.

Fireball and Indy -- I love those shirts! I can't bring myself to even shoot a chicken-killing-stealing raccoon, and I still can't wring a pigeon's neck, but I can cook up a squirrel or a deer or a goose if someone else does it! But those shirts are funny to me!

I'm reading a book right now about a traveling circus in the 1930's, and one of the horses foundered beyond any hope, so they put him down. The wife got mad at her husband for feeding her beloved horse to the lions and tigers, but I think that was perfectly sensible. The horse is dead, doesn't care what happens to its body! Why let the cats starve?

Since I've been raising horses to sell for a living for half my life, I had to learn to detach from emotions a long time ago. It's all about logic now.

Quick, humane death and then why not put it right back into the food chain?

Just my lil ol' humble opinion! :)

Sorry, Andrew -- I do feel for you. I used to be that way, still love all animals, but to be able to raise and sell them, let them go to an unknown future, I had to toughen up a little. It was that, or go back to working in an office, and I chose the critters!

You guys are too much!
