how many peoples start putting their youngs into the kit box at 18 days old like what pensom says in his book? is there really a difference if you wait a little longer?

I don't know how many kits you have but do you put that young of a bird with a real seasoned kit or with a bunch of up and coming ones. It would be interesting to see the answers you get here. I generally hold off for a full month or so. That's just me. Of course, I have been doing my own thing by trial and error without this kind of support group to learn from.

The youngest I think I've wean a bird might be 18days but I mostly do it maybe 21-24 days old when they cant fly yet. Its more easy for me to train them outside.

Brudahpete he means like putting them on there own like a kitbox or pen but pulling them from their parents at that age and not put in with older birds....
Tou I am one of those who pull his babies at 18 days old the way Pensom train his birds in that book I sent you is the same way I train mine.with them being pull at that age they learn who to depend on their own eating by them self .an early recognition of their owner .an increase eagerness to use their wings an outstanding intelligence to learn their loft and surroundings... Now what I do is put them back in once in a while so that the parents can give them a good feeding before put away..I dip their head in water so that they learn to drink on their own once I see that.. they don't go back with their parents.. good post..

Right on. I'm just shooting in the dark here as I'm not into the jargon of pigeon talk having done this myself with no mentor for years. The info is awesome though!

I don't have good luck with introducing young birds in a kit with older birds. They just aren't aggressive enough to compete for the feed.

However, I will throw 1 or 2 older hens in with young birds to show them where to get a drink. There is always a couple that I have to physically dip their beaks in the water a few times to let them get the hang of it.

They usually pick up on the feeding on their own.

Hey Brother Val sup.. Val I don't put them in with older birds neither because they get pick on..I do have fun with them when I put the parents in the fly pen and put the babies with them and put feed on the floor and watch the babies be a pain in the butt going after the parents and not letting them eat cause they shoving the beaks into their beak..lol.. then the babies get tire of not getting feed when they want they mimic their parents and eat on their own they start picking on the floor for grain too then they get fed by the parents so they get smart they eat their grains and eat from the parents too.a doulble.. this is the part I enjoy when I do this..

21 days with them as close in age as possible.Best I've been able to do is have 20 in the kitbox all born within 30 days of each other.By 23 days they will be eating on their own.18 days is a little young.

I just find with 25 days they are a little homed in to the breeder loft and it takes a few more days to break them of that.
