Pensom's book, The Birmingham Roller Pigeon was first printed in November of 1958. This book is the "Bible" of the breed, and it needs to read, and studied by the serious breeder of the Birmingham Roller. It contains undiluted information that can be of great value in preserving the highest qualities of our breed. Paul Gomez

Thanks, Amazon has 2 copies at around $40. Might be worth the investment when you consider him to be the best authority on these birds.

Do you really think so, Paul? I mean I have the greatest respect for the man and his accomplishements, but as far as a practical "How to..." book on rollers, I think this book fails miserably. It's chocked full of contradictions and vague esoteric rhetoric that most of us cannnot really make any sense out of, as far as the everyday breeding and flying of rollers. And so much of it seems to have been dis-proved in modern times. It seems that I've gotten much more practical advice, as well as the benefit of the experince of veterans in the sport with their rollers...just standing under their kits and handling birds afterwards. Oh, I think every roller man ought to read Pensom's book, but it's more like nostalgia and reverence for the work the man did than anything else, for me. JMHO, Cliff

I think no one will be able to write about "how to" that will fit or work out for everyone. There is just to much. No matter what your name is and who you are you will always be learning. ---------- Good Game Loft

I have a healthy library (rollers) and a prolific reader..Not much new going on today..much just echos of the past. But I still read hopeing to find something new. Bruce

Prior to Bill Pensom coming to America and the importations of the Pensom roller the Americans were flying rollers for hours like tipplers with a bird performing once and a while. It was Bill Pensom who showed them how to fly Birmingham rollers both traditional style and simultaneous performance. Even as late 1959 he was trying to teach them about simultaneous performance and even brought some English competition rollers here to show the Americans a lesson. He was so far ahead of his time and the majority of the principles adopted today in the largest club in America are from his diligence along with his followers. How can the student now bash the teacher? In the academic world we know that our predecessors during their time made mistakes but we have built our foundation on them and people after us will build were we left off? He was and always will be the greatest contributor to what we have today in America. There is no doubt about it and he deserves the utmost respect for his contributions. We know that General Patton made mistakes and Generals today would have done some things differently but the Generals of the past have led us where we are today! May the lord Bless his soul and thank you Bill for the wonderful things you have done!

Cliff, I really believe that Pensom's book has had a bigger impact on roller breeders than any other book. In fact, probably those later books were written by rollermen who had learned much of what they knew from Pensom. But it is only natural that later things are built on the foundation that were laid before them. Pensom defined the breed and emphasized the difficulty of producing rollers that perform to his description. He was not writing a "how to" style book, or a "Rollers for Duimmies" type book. Later writers were filling in areas that he didn't cover or wasn't interested in including. Someone can always find fault, but there are far too many roller breeders who have ignored his advice. As far as I'm concerned, Pensom's book has been a towering success and it is probably more relevant now than it was the day it was published.

LaRon, I just read your post after responding to Cliff. We are very much in agreement... The thought just crossed my mind, that it is very possible that if it were not for Pensom, the Birmingham Roller as he described it might be extinct today. Paul G

Paul,LaRon,List, I was, by no means, bashing the man or the book. His contribution to the hobby is immense. Good post LaRon and Paul, and I agree with what you each said, looking at it from that perspective. As you said, Paul, I was sorta looking at it strictly from the perspective of a "How to..." book. It is probably more relavant to a guy who has already learned the basics than to somebody looking for basic nuts and bolts. Cliff
