Genes are spread in these birds from so many generations they will surface from time to time.by culling hard you cut your chances in the breeding loft with the right pair and even then you still will get a cull because not every bird you breed is going to be perfect .. ---------- Ralph

I believe that all animals breed towards average. Tall horses produce shorter, short horses produce taller, and ect. We are breeding for exceptional rollers, but our breeders tend to produce towards the average. Only the rare pair of breeders produce exceptional rollers. Average pairs produce just as many or more below average birds than above average birds. So we have culls.

You breed for traits that you want to see. Your culls are cull because of a lack of those traits. Are they bad birds? Not necessarily, they just don't perform to your liking. You breed culls and you may get a few that perform but the odds are that you'll cull them too. When building a good strain, you can waste a ton of time hoping that you can resurrect desirable traits out of your culls. Just my .02.

Too many gene combinations. This is also why some great stock take for instance the race horse Seabiscuit (rent the movie if you can find it) it was filmed in my home state-Kentucky, was a great racehorse and beat the crap out of every other horse of its time (My neighbor down the road actually worked with him when he was a foal) but in reality he never really produced any offspring as good as he was. On the flip side some stallions are prepotent meaning you can breed them to about anything and still get good offspring. I think the same is true in pigeons some of the legendary roller pigeon band numbers people throw around were probably prepotent birds that produced good on almost anything, problem is just cause a bird has that animal in its ancestry doesn't necessarily mean they are good or their offspring will be prepotent like they were. They could just as easily be junk.

Actually the horse and Jockey both were kind of underdogs. The horse broke its leg and the jockey got hurt too in one of the earlier races. They kind of nursed each other back to health and came back to be a force again. It's a real good movie for people that like to see the underdog prevail as I do. The "Match race between ol seabiscuit who looks no bigger than a pony against this huge athletic horse of noble bloodlines (can't remeber his name) gets crushed by ol seabiscuit in the end. It's a pretty good movie. I think the version I saw is now about 7-8 years old now. I guess I need to watch it again it's been a while.

Hey, Pumpkin Man -- you're thinking of Seabiscuit beating War Admiral . . . yeah, a great story. Then, there's the movie "Rudy" (football), a story of a runt of a guy who just worked so dang hard that he overcame all, and then I love the story that they made the movie "Cinderella Man" with Russell Crowe. I sure love those underdog stories.
